4 Tips for Writing Great Blog Headlines

January 26, 2010 - As any seasoned marketer or journalist will tell you, there is an art to writing great headlines. But web marketing and the rules of search engine optimization (SEO) have transformed the role of the headline. No longer is it enough to write a catchy, clever title, and leave it at that.

Marketing and SEO principles dictate that you - the online marketer - write titles and headlines that not only inform and engage the reader, but that are also highly optimized to drive traffic to your site.

You don't have to be an expert to write awesome blog headlines that drive traffic to your site. By following a few basic principles of blog headline writing, you will be well on your way to mastering the art of writing powerful blog headlines.

Listed below are 4 tips for writing great blog headlines
:

  • Grab your reader's attention - Do not underestimate the power of a dull headline to keep readers away. A compelling headline, on the other hand, will entice a reader to click on the link to learn more.
  • Be target specific - Write to the crowd that you are seeking, and the search engines will be more likely to follow. Include target-specific keywords, including geo-specific keywords, whenever appropriate. Example; if you're writing about Ohio divorce laws, include specific terms (i.e. "Tips for Seeking Divorce in Ohio") that target your audience.
  • Don't garble the message - In the quest to include as many SEO keywords as possible, don't write a headline that is in any way confusing or overly wordy. A reader should be able to read your blog headline and immediately understand what the blog is about without having to wade through confusing syntax or an overabundance of adjectives.
  • Use numbers, adjectives and action verbs to motivate readers - Busy web browsers value content that can make their life easier. A great blog headline will promise a quick and succinct answer to a question, new information, trade tips or ideas on how to do something better. Headlines with well-placed numbers, adjectives and a call-to-action motivate readers. Example; "8 Secrets To Achieving a Painless Ohio Divorce."
