Web Dominance Shifting from Information to Social

October 23, 2009 - There is a great article today in TechCrunch that includes a recap of Sean Parker's talk at the Web 2.0 Summit. Parker is a managing partner at Founder's Fund and co-founder of Facebook, and his talk centered around the possible future dominance of certain Web properties.

In the talk, Parker discusses his views on why he thinks the next phase of the Internet is moving from "information services" like Google and Yahoo, to more integrated "network services" like Facebook and Twitter. The main reason? By looking at current trends and recent Internet innovations, it seems that "data collecting is less valuable than connecting people."

Although Parker's opinions are purely speculative, they do bring up a good point. With the exponential popularity of social networking, which even the major search engines are now integrating with their search results, a significant shift in Internet usage is clearly affecting how people use and respond to the Internet. While Parker admits that Google will not lose any relevancy, it's the overall dominance of social networking that will step to the forefront.

For business owners and marketers with an online presence, these trends and ideas underscore the need to get involved with social media and begin connecting with customers or risk losing out to competitors with a strong social networking strategy.

Having search engine optimized copy makes it easy for search engines to find your Web pages. If your website doesn't have the top search engine ranking on Google, We Do Web Content can help boost your web marketing goals. Web Browsers: Did You Know You Have a Choice?

August 27, 2009 - When it comes to web browsers, most average PC users thought they basically had to use IE (internet explorer), then Mozilla Firefox came around and started getting some traction, and a lot of people switched over. If you had a MAC, most likely you used some version of Safari, and as far as the average non-techy goes, those 3 services are basically the beginning and end of web browsing options.

In reality, not so.

Mashable has put together a great list of alternative web browsers who are sick and tired of the horrible and ongoing issues with IE 6, but perhaps were not entirely aware that they have the choice to go elsewhere. After all, that little IE button is on every PC desktop I've ever seen.

Break free of IE and get to browsing without all the crashing and hullabaloo.

Internet Addiction Rehab Open for Business

August 24, 2009 - While it might not be as common as heroin addiction, reports of people whose love for the Internet turns into a debilitating and alienating mental condition is on the rise. The offcial name for such a disorder is IAD, Internat Addiction Disorder, and while it is not yet been added to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manuel of Mental Disorders, there is now a fully operational program called reSTART at the Heavensfield Retreat Center, which claims to be the first US program created to directly treat Internet Addiction.

Many people associate IAD with hardcore Internet-based video gamers, such as those who just can't stop playing Word of Warcraft. The reSTART program is a 45-day treatment program located near Seattle, WA that disconnects the addicts from the Internet and attempts to help them regain social skills and learn about life beyond the 'net with the help of therapists, exercise, yoga, and other activities.

If your not sure about the validity of Internet Addiction, just check out this video from CNN:

How Harry Potter Sales Changed the Book Industry

Harry Potter books have changed industry expectations for the income generated by stories for children.
No longer are book sales by an unknown author, such as J. K. Rowling was pre-Potter, allowed to build and crest gradually. Instead, publishers want a tsunami of pre-orders, merchandise tie-ins and overnight sales. And why not, after the explosion the final Harry Potter book caused?

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
, the final book in the series alone:

  • Had over 1 million Amazon and Barnes & Noble pre-orders
  • Became the fastest-selling book title of all time
  • Will be made into not one but two feature-length movies (Warner Bros., to be released 2010 and 2011)

It is safe to say that J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter book series revolutionized children's publishing. While the effects on readers have been considered positive, the effects on the industry's up-and-coming authors have yet to be calculated.

To view more examples of our work, visit the Sample Content section of our website. And to learn more about J.K. Rowling and Harry Potter, read our sample article Harry Potter Blazes the Publishing Trail.

Back to School Tip: Establish a Routine to Alleviate First Day Jitters

As a parent, one of the most important things you can do to help calm a child who is feeling nervous about school is to go through the entire morning and after school routine for a few weeks before school starts. This way, your kid's first day of school will be less stressful for everyone involved. Obviously, the more relaxed you are, the less first day jitters your child will experience.

When running through your routine, be sure to include all of the following:

  • Wake your child at the time you plan to wake him or her up once school starts
  • Have your child take a bath, get dressed, eat breakfast, make lunch and perform any other morning activities he or she will need to do during the school year
  • Show your child the bus stop or drive him or her to school and point out where you will be dropping him or her off
  • Show your child where you will be picking him or her up after school

You might also want to consider hiring a babysitter or asking a relative to watch your child for a few hours after you complete the morning routine. This way, your child will get used to being away from you for a few hours each day and you can work out any separation anxiety issues your child may be facing.

Visit our library to learn more about how you can help your child with overcoming their first day of school jitters.

When Feeling Nervous About School Isn't Normal: Dealing with Bullies

If your child seems to be having a particularly difficult time getting past the first day of school jitters, it is possible there is more going on than just the routine first day fears. In some cases where a child seems to be overly nervous about school, the underlying cause is problems with a bully.

Although your natural response to your child's bullying problem will be to get upset, it is best to remain calm when your child tells you about his or her bully. A child who has been picked on by a bully already feels victimized and seeing you upset will only increase your child's sense of weakness. Rather, experts recommend empowering your child by taking action and reporting the bullying to the school.

Your child's school should have a bully policy already in place. If not, or if the policy is not adequate or it is poorly enforced, consider going to your school board to get the policy amended or make sure your school's administration follows through on the problem properly.

Wearable internet gear on the horizon

Wearable internet gear is here and may soon be available
at the affordable price of $350. A system developed by the Fluid Interfaces Group is the focus of an article by ReadWriteWeb's Richard MacManus that calls wearable devices "the most impressive future Web interface that [he's] seen in a while."

McManus is particularly enamored with the system worn by users which allows them to interact with the internet via a webcam, tiny battery-operated projector, mirror, phone, and colored finger caps.

Wearable internet systems could very well compete with mobile phones which have limitations related to functionality that wearable gear overcomes.

6 out of 10 Companies Not Upgrading to Windows 7

July 13, 2009 - According to a recent survey by ScriptLogic, 6 out of 10 companies surveyed will not be upgrading to Windows 7 despite positive early reviews of the new operating system.

Mediapost reports that the companies choosing not to upgrade cite budget cuts and compatability concerns with current applications as the main reasons why they'll be sticking with their current systems. The survey also found that only 5.4% of the companies that did say they would make the switch to Windows 7 are planning to implement the change by the end of the year, 34% plan on switching by the end of 2010.

Windows 7 is set to launch on October 22, 2009.

Google Set To Launch New Operating System

July 8, 2009 - Google, the world's most popular search engine, is expanding their domain further into Microsoft territory with the announcement of a new operating system based on its Chrome Web browser, called Chrome Operating System.

The announcement, which came courtesy of a Google Chrome blog post, promises that the new system will be "open source" with a code available to consumers by the latter half of 2010, allowing third party developers to create applications for the operating system similar to what is currently happening on websites like Twitter and Facebook.

This is the latest battle in the Google vs. Microsoft war, with both companies creating new programs and software to rival each other's supreme dominance. Whether Google's new operating system will take a chunk out of Window's market share or Bing continues to stretch its search engine muscle, no one can say that both companies aren't trying really hard to expand their empire in perhaps unexpected channels.

Sundar Pichai, Google's vice president of Product Management, wrote in the Google blog, "Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. We're designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web. And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work."

Mozilla Launches Open Web Tools Directory

In an attempt to help web developers get all the tools they need to create killer websites in one location, Mozilla, the creators of Firefox, are launching an extensive centralized index of every web tool currently available -- tools.mozilla.com*.

When you get a first glimpse of the "index", it can seem confusing as the applications look like symbols and screen shots floating in space.

Ben Galbraith explains the design decision on the Mozilla Lab Blog (via Techcrunch):

We went with a "space" theme to emphasize the sheer size of the tool ecosystem (though at the moment we only have a small fraction of the tools available listed). And, frankly, we just couldn't do another table-based master/detail database application; we wanted a directory that would be fun to use (and perhaps a bit of fun to create as well).

Thankfully the index does include a search feature that should help Web developers find what they are seeking beyond scouring the nebulous database. Mozilla is also encouraging developers to submit their own tools to help build the site.

A one-stop tool shop for Web developers? Why didn't anyone think of this before now?

* you will need to have either Firefox 3.5, Opera 9, Chrome 2, or Safari 4 to view the web tool index site.

When developing an online marketing strategy it is important that you select a company that has Internet marketing experience, which includes copywriting, SEO services, and website promotion. Internet Explorer Is Going Down - The Great Browser War is On!

July 6, 2009 - (via TechCrunch) After a decade of being the top dog Web browser, Internet Explorer is finally receiving some great competition and users are flocking to new or updated browsers at a rapid pace.

Web browsers like Firefox 3.5 (which has been downloaded 14 million times since last week), Google's improved version of Chrome, and Apple's Safari 4 are actually making the term "browser market" relevant again, especially in light of new research released by Statcounter which claims that Internet Explorer has lost 11.4% of their market share to other browsers since March.

While Microsoft is trying to keep their stronghold on the industry, especially through the introduction of Internet Explorer 8 in March, it seems like Internet users are starting to understand that they can actually choose which Web browser they like and aren't stuck with IE out of habit or the idea that IE was the only browser out there.

We'll keep an eye on how this trend grows and how Microsoft responds.

Lawsuit claims Google infringed on trademark, skewed search results

A lawsuit filed
by computer software company, Ascentive, claims that Google has committed trademark infringement by allowing competitors to use words associated with Ascentive as "keywords."

Keywords can be purchased through Google's pay-per-click program
, Adwords. When a user searches the internet with a certain keyword, purchased advertisements associated with those keywords will appear alongside organic search results.

Ascentive alleges that Google permitted terms such as "Finally Fast" to be bought by rival businesses, triggering advertisements for those businesses, rather than Ascentive. Similar trademark infringement lawsuits have been filed against Google in the recent past, but only one lawsuit (by Geico) went to trial. Google settled the lawsuit in 2005.

Ascentive's lawsuit contains an additional allegation that is unique to the recent rash of lawsuits against the premier search engine. Ascentive claims that Google removed its name from organic search results citing a decrease of almost 75% decrease in traffic to their site during a limited time period.

Craigslist sued in first trademark infringement case

Craigslist was sued by a Texas-based real estate company in May for trademark infringement. First Call Properties alleges that Craigslist failed to monitor their site for ads that might infringe on the First Call trademark. AAA Apartment Locating placed ads on Craigslist featuring phrases such as "first call," "call us first" and "make us your first call."

The lawsuit was filed in a Texas state court but has been removed to Federal court and names Craigslist, AAA Apartment, and two individuals as defendants.

The suit is similar to ones filed against Google alleging that Google failed to protect customers from competitors who use the customers' trademarked keywords to lure users to their site. Google settled such a lawsuit filed by Geico but denied wrongdoing.

Craigslist real estate ads are free in some locales, such as Texas, which complicates the legal issues in the case. Most federal laws on the matter govern scenarios involving paid-for advertisements.

Michael Jackson's Death - Which Media Got it Right?

June 26, 2009 - Techcrunch published a great article today that looks at how mainstream and online/social media responded to the emerging news of Michael Jackson's death last night.

There have been several published reports of websites like The Los Angeles Times, Twitter, and TMZ all periodically shutting down due to overload, and certinaly the news stations were struggling to keep up with slowly forthcoming information, so who seemed to be on the money and who was following from behind?

Technically the time line begins when TMZ breaks the first reports of Jackson being taken to UCLA Medical Center. This seems to be followed by frantic tweets on Twitter "approximately 40 minutes before the L.A. Times followed up with a confirmation of Jackson's death," according to the Techcrunch piece.

Basically the online kids beat the newsies, which of course mainstream media isn't too thrilled about and forces them to go directly to the great "credibility" debate, which is basically the best thing they have going for them at the moment.

To properly illustrate the amazing nature of real-time search and Twitter, check out the video below that documents Twitter's trending topics in real time during the beginning of the Michael Jackson hoopla:

Dunkin Donuts Debuts DunkinRun

Dunkin Donuts
has launched a new website which aims to make group orders "easier, more efficient and more viral," according to a Marketing Daily article. The donut and coffee retailer's new site, www.DunkinRun.com, is available for users to place orders online, and via an iPhone application.

The office or post-party "coffee runner" can send an alert to co-workers or friends to notify them of a coffee/donut run. The recipients can then place orders through the site by viewing an online menu, or selecting personal favorites from previous orders. The runner can then print the order or show a Dunkin Donuts staff member the mobile device with the order on it.
Dunkin Donuts has created a marketing strategy for the new site to include:

  • Outreach to influential press and bloggers
  • Mailing preloaded loyalty cards to valued customers
  • Radio promotions/advertising
  • Online advertising
  • Promotion via the company sponsorship of the Boston Red Sox
  • Advertising in elevators in Boston (home to the highest number of store locations)

Panasonic's Toughbook Survives Tiger Attack

June 25, 2009 - Perfect for updating your Facebook profile during a bomb raid or if you really need to Google information about African elephants after one has stepped on your laptop, the Panasonic CF-30 "Toughbook" isn't just a clever title, but an almost indestructible laptop.

Forbes decided to conduct their own tests to really see how the  Panasonic Toughbook measured up, and the results are amazing.

The Toughbook survived:

  • Being fed to a white bengal tiger (to his credit the tiger did manage to get 5 keys off, but the notebook still booted up)
  • Having Doritos smashed into its screen
  • Getting soaked with Diet Coke
  • Getting stepped on by an elephant
  • And even being shot with a .22 caliber bullet

SFGate's blog about the incredible Toughbook includes a pretty great video that puts the notebook through even more unimaginable laptop horrors. What will happen when they try to blow up with Toughbook with dynamite? Only one way to find out.

Legislators seek to increase privacy for online consumers

Bipartisanship support exists for new legislation that would increase privacy for consumers online. Representatives from both parties have voiced concern over companies that track information about consumers in order to tailor advertisement to them.

According to an article in the Wall Street Journal last week, representatives in the House are currently drafting legislation to give consumers more control over information that is collected while they are surfing online.

Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft have voiced support for such policies but there is debate in the industry as to whether users should be forced to opt-out of automated data collection, or opt-in to allow it. Internet companies reportedly prefer the opt-out approach, which would necessitate a user taking action to prevent collection. An opt-in approach would bar collection unless consumers specifically wanted to participate.

Some lawmakers voiced concern that such legislation could affect companies' bottom-line, during a time when many have bit hit hard by the downturn in the economy.
