More Reasons To Embrace Design: Google Launches Page Preview

November 3, 2009 - The competition in search engine marketing just got a little bit tougher as Google launched their new "page preview" option. For Google users who click on the page preview option (which on the left side of the screen after selecting "show options"), Google will provide small snapshots of the web page next to the search result.

What does that mean for you? If the searcher can get a glimpse of your web page next to the web pages of several other lawyers that show up in the search engine results along side you, that web design becomes a major factor in whether or not the searcher will click on your page. Since these page views are available without physically going to the website, your tracking system won't even pick up on this factor, which may result in more or less page clicks than usual.

The best advice, as usual, is to make sure your web design is clean, modern, sophisticated, and stands out (in a positive way) from your competitors. Of course people will have their personal aesthetic choices that may influence them in ways you cannot control, but if one page preview shows a web page that is neatly laid out right above or below another page jumbled with loud colors, annoying advertisements, large flash, or content bleeding into the borders, they are going to go with the clean looking website (even if your Page Title and content sound more interesting).

Your website is basically your online office and represents your firm to potential clients. Would you let a client walk into an office with trash all over the floor, tacky 1970's furniture, and a rude receptionist that doesn't answer any questions? Hopefully not. Your website needs to be looked at through a similar lens while keeping in mind Internet editing and readability standards as well as navigation and ease-of-use issues.

Having search engine optimized copy makes it easy for search engines to find your Web pages. If your website doesn't have the top search engine ranking on Google, We Do Web Content can help boost your online marketing goals. SEO Content: Quality Over Quantity

November 13, 2009 - When it comes to SEO content, of course you want hundreds of articles and blogs on your website, all of which are infused with your keywords and working like little marketing machines to help drive your web traffic through search engine results. The problem that often comes up though, is that in the quest for more and more SEO content, when does quality get sacrificed for quantity?

In an attempt to constantly produce and publish SEO content to satisfy search engines, website owners often forget about the end user -- the person that is actually supposed to enjoy and learn something from that content . This is an incredibly dangerous oversight because if the person performing the search clicks on your website to find a subpar, shoddily written article that in no way engages or informs them about said topic, they aren't going to keep clicking through your website, they are going to leave in a hurry.

Remember, the average Internet user spends 4 seconds scanning a web page to determine if they want to read it. You have 4 seconds to grab that reader's attention or they are gone. Hastily publishing poorly edited articles with only a search engine in mind will in no way enhance your user's experience or your conversion rates.

Quantity is great, but not at the expense of quality. All of the web content that you publish on your website represents YOU. Poor quality will not only make you seem unprofessional, but will quickly send away any audience you may have gained through your SEO efforts. It's like selling thousands of tickets to an Aerosmith concert, but when the excited crowd gets to the venue, they find only a dive-bar cover band that doesn't even know all the lyrics to Dude Looks Like a Lady. Would you stick around for that?

I think not.

Having search engine optimized copy makes it easy for search engines to find your Web pages. If your website doesn't have a first page search engine ranking on Google, We Do Web Content can help boost your web marketing goals. We Do Web Content takes pride in producing high-quality and affordable SEO web copy that is clean, consistent, and formatted for Internet marketing. SEO Content and Adaptability

November 2, 2009 -  Search engine optimization is an ongoing process. Websites are never "done", rules do not remain static for long, and the entire process of creating and maintaining a successful website means constantly adding new content and being in touch with the major search industry changes that will affect the value and effectiveness of your website.

Search engines constantly tweak their algorithms in an attempt to improve their search engine results. Part of this is to deter spammers, weed out black hat SEO practices, and ensure that the most relevant pieces of content available for each subject appear at the top of the page for any given search. Needless to say, sometimes these changes are successful, other times not so much, and other times the spammers just move on to their next trick.

Such is the way of the Internet when billions of advertising and search engine marketing dollars are involved. These changes however, affect your SEO Content in a few important ways:

1. SEO Content is King, if written with your targeted keywords, Meta tags, quality inbound and outbound links, etc., your SEO content should continue to rank and perform well despite fluctuating algorithm tweaks. SEO content is also more adaptable, meaning it is easier to go into the content and change around a few word placements, keywords, etc if necessary than it is to revamp backend SEO efforts for the entire website. Sometimes website overhauls will need to happen if large changes take place, but SEO content (if done correctly) is less vulnerable to those types of issues.

2. Gimmicks and Tricks don't last, search engines quickly discover black hat SEO practices, change their algorithms to immediately end any false traffic getting shifted to such sites, and if your website is found guilty by the scan bots at Google or Bing of participating in deceptive SEO techniques, your website will be labeled as spam and sent into the dark ages (meaning it will not appear in search engine results without a major overhaul).

The justice system on the Internet is not perfect. If you hire an SEO Expert who fills your website with black hat SEO techniques (even without your knowledge) and you get caught, there is no punishment for the fraud SEO expert. It will be your website that gets blacklisted by the search engines and you who will have to pick up the pieces and spend thousands of dollars, resources, and months of work rebuilding your damaged website. Sure you can file a complaint against the so-called SEO expert, tell your friends not to use them, etc. but Google isn't going to go after them, they are just going to punish your website.

So do your research, try to obtain at least a minimum understanding of SEO, interview any company you are looking at for outsourcing, look at their clients' websites, and ask them to explain their process to you. Any reliable company will be able to explain the basics of their optimization services without revealing any "company secrets" they just can't share. If they refuse to tell you how they work, don't answer your questions, or come across as shady, just walk away.

MSN Revamps and Relaunches Home Page

November 4, 2009 - MSN is undergoing a huge redesign that aims to declutter their home page and create a better user experience through a clean, sleek interface, easier navigation, a lot less links, and integration efforts with social media sites like Facebook and Twitter.

The new look and feel of MSN is set to launch today but won't be universally available until early 2010. You can however preview the new MSN until the rollout goes widespread.

In addition to losing a lot of links (and the blue color scheme), MSN is pushing Bing and Live.com services front and center, and focusing more on online video as well as live feeds connected to your Facebook and Twitter accounts so you can see updates without leaving the MSN portal. Pretty cool.

Will you be using MSN as your new portal of choice thanks to the new redesign, or will you keep your home page set to Google? Leave a comment and let us know!

Concerns Speak Louder Than Actions When it Comes to Social Media Privacy

A lot of social media network users are concerned about the privacy of the information they post online, however, not many of them are doing anything about it according to research released from Webroot, a security solutions company (via ReadWriteWeb). Webroot created a survey aimed at users of social media networks like Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter, and others to determine behaviors and insights from folks who are currently involved in social networking.

According to Webroot's survey, 78% of social media users reported that they are concerned about the privacy levels surrounding the information in their profile, but when asked further about what actions they take to protect their privacy online there was a huge disconnect.

80% of the users who were concerned about privacy allowed their profiles (in part or in full) to be indexed by Google and other public search engines. 66% of the social media users questioned did not restrict any of their profile information access.

Part of these numbers are clearly due to the constant confusion regarding privacy settings on social media profiles. A lot of people don't know how to use these privacy controls or are sometimes completely unaware that their information is being publicly indexed.

Read the entire story in ReadWriteWeb.

Do you think social media privacy settings are hard to use? Should this information be indexed (great for marketers) or is there a limit to what information should be made public, even when we are posting it online?

Tell us what you think!

When developing an online marketing strategy it is important that you select a company that has Internet marketing experience, which includes copywriting, SEO services, and website promotion. Facebook Ups Their Search with Vanity URLs

Facebook  has announced the launch of their new vanity URL program, a step that will not only allow Facebook users to find their friends and favorite brands more easily on Facebook, but also through major search engines like Google starting at 12:01 am EST this Satruday night.

The Facebook vanity URLs are expected to become a major hit with individual users and companies alike, as Facebook users up until now have been assigned a random URL that doesn't help with searches. The launch of the vanity URLs will have heavy Facebook users and marketers scrambling for the best names for their Facebook fan pages.

Facebook is also taking several precautions to help businesses protect their brand identity and discourage domain-squatters and other users who would try to claim the most prominent names and sell them off to the highest bidder.

Some of the Facebook vanity URL precautions include:

  • Once a vanity URL is chosen it cannot be changed or transfered (a great attempt to discourage domain squatters)
  • People who have signed up for a Facebook Page after May 31 will have a waiting period before being allowed to choose their vanity URL
  • Facebook is barring  generic names, i.e. - "pizza" or "flowers" from being used for vanity URLs
  • Facebook is also supplying a form where businesses can request that their trademarked names are not registered to another group

So choose your vanity URL carefully, get ready, get set, and go market!

Internet Users Learn from Search Engines

November 30, 2009 - According to a new report from a team of researchers via Pennsylvania State University, search engines aren't just a tool to find information or products, but a learning process that combines basic aspects of learning with advanced evaluation skills.

Mediapost reports that the study, which focused on the search habits of 72 Internet users who performed 426 searches, was designed to study the motivational, cognitive, and contextual factors of how people use search engines. In the long run, these factors can heavily influence future designs and navigational choices for search engines as they continue to refine their features and improve their own functionality to respond to users' behavior.

Other interesting facts that surfaced in the study reveal that 72% of all the searches were performed on Google and more than 18% of the participants used two search engines to complete their search.

Are we really getting away from the idea that a search engine is just a means to find information, or is this study too small to prove that searching is a learning activity? Leave a comment and let us know what you think!

Is Google's Algorithm Feeling the Need for Speed?

November 16, 2009 - Google currently takes into account over 200 factors in their algorithm to determine the relevancy for any web page. While that might sound impressive, the search engine giant is considering adding another factor into the equation -- page load speed.

Google LogoThat's right, Google may soon start looking at how long it takes a web page to load when qualifying its relevance, meaning pages that load faster would hypothetically rank higher than similar, but slower loading web pages. Of course nothing has been confirmed yet, but Matt Cutts gave a speech at PubCon that alluded page loading speed could be a factor in Google's organic search results in 2010.

It's also important to note that even if and when this change goes into effect, it is unlikely that web page loading speed will be included among the most important search engine ranking factors; however, it should still give some incentive to website owners to make sure their websites are running in tip top shape and loading fairly quickly. Even if Google doesn't change their algorithm to include web page loading speeds, a slow loading page can still negatively impact your bounce rate and overall user experience.

Bing Now Including Wolfram Alpha in Search Results

November 11, 2009 - In addition to Microsoft releasing the new MSN redesign preview page and converting MSN video to Bing video, they are also updating Bing's search results by including data from Wolfram Alpha.

The partnership had been rumored for months, practically since Bing's launch, so it will be exciting to see how Internet searchers respond to the new information in their search results. Unlike Bing, Wolfram Alpha doesn't search the Internet but takes your query and computes the data.

For the initial rollout, the Wolfram Alpha data will show up alongside queries for nutrition and diet-related Bing searches. So in addition to seeing search engine results about French fries, you'll also see Wolfram Alpha's data about the nutritional content of French fries, as in the screenshot below (courtesy of TechCrunch):

Bing Screenshot

Don't worry if you don't see your Wolfram Alpha data results right away, the new Bing addition is in gradual roll-out mode. They'll get to us eventually! You'll know when your WA results finally do show up, as the information will always be accompanied by "computed by Wolfram Alpha".

Do you think the addition of Wolfram Alpha data will give Bing a boost in the search engine market? Leave a comment and let us know what you think!

Twitter Reaches Search Agreements with Google and Bing

October 22, 2009 - After a lengthy negotiation process, Twitter has finally reached search agreements with both Google and Bing, giving the search engines full access to public tweets.

The search deal is a big boost for Twitter, who may finally start seeing some major profits, as well as the search engines who are very excited about upping their real-time search updates with a steady stream of up-to-the-second public opinions and breaking news.

It will be interesting to see just how Google and Bing start ranking tweets in their search engine results, and just how many tweets will appear for any given query. If you consider the popularity of certain Twitter trending topics, a single search engine query could hypothetically result in more tweets than web pages. Of course, Google and Bing aren't stupid, and that scenario seems unlikely at best, but it does bring up the issue of just what to do with these highly sought after tweets and how they will affect search results overall.

Yahoo Ending Search Submit to Focus on Content

October 20, 2009 - Yahoo is ending its paid inclusion programs, Search Submit Basic and Search Submit Pro in an effort to change the company's focus to display advertising and content.

The notice, which was just released by Yahoo, states that the paid inclusion programs will end on Dec 31, giving marketers time to adjust their search marketing strategies to focus on optimizing their content instead of relying on Search Submit to get their web pages indexed more quickly by the search engine. The programs were originally designed to allow paid subscribers to submit their pages directly to Yahoo for priority indexing instead of waiting for the search engine to schedule their own crawl, a process that roughly occurs every week or so.

This move is viewed by some as a sign that will Yahoo to eventually adopt Bing as their organic search provider, but according to Yahoo, the ending of the search inclusion programs will allow Yahoo to focus their efforts on improving organic search, ad targeting, and the creation of their own quality web content.

For marketers and web developers, the end of these programs stresses the need for more search engine optimized content that will allow them to rank highly in the top search engine results for their most important keywords without relying on the paid short-cut program to index their pages faster.

Until this point, Yahoo was the only major search engine to offer such a feature and it remains unclear if a third-party developer would or could create a similar independent program, but without a backing of an actual search engine, that seems unlikely.

For now, the best search engine placement strategy would be a focus on search engine optimized content that is tailored to a business's target audience and naturally infuses keywords and phrases with relevant and engaging web copy.

The Evils of Duplicate Content

August 14, 2009 - It's a tough economy and people are looking to same money where they can, but cutting corners on your SEO content will end up costing you more in the long run.

Anyone who has had a website for a while or researched SEO content providers has found tons of websites that sell really cheap pre-written content or have "free" content you can just cut and paste into your website. Unfortunately, those same exact articles from the headlines to the images are also appearing on hundreds or possibly thousands of other websites and they will TANK your search engine ranking.

Search engines like Google heavily penalize duplicate content, so not only will those articles not help you drive traffic or appear in searches, they actually lower the overall ranking of your website. If you are trying to make the most of your online marketing budget, the last thing you need to happen is to have your own web pages work against you.

Even though it may take a little more time and energy, creating (or outsourcing) 100% original, organic SEO content is the best and most efficient way to build your website, show up in organic search engine results, and achieve a search engine ranking that will help get your website found.

If you don't have the time or the writing skills to create your own SEO content, contact We Do Web Content today and ask about our SEO copywriting services.

Having search engine optimized copy makes it easy for search engines to find your Web pages. It's Done - Microsoft and Yahoo Have Reached a Deal

July 29, 2009 - After years of stalled negotiations and no shortage of last minute rumors, Microsoft and Yahoo! have finally, actually reached a deal that will allow Yahoo! searches to be powered by Bing and Yahoo! to take on the "exclusive worldwide relationship sales force for both companies' premium search advertisers."

While the deal did not include the huge upfront payoffs Yahoo! investors were salivating over, the exclusive 10 year deal is definitely a milestone for both companies, who both have a lot to gain through searches and advertising with the new collaboration.

Both Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and Yahoo! CEO Carol Bartz were all smiles and optimism in the new press release detailing the specifics.

According to Bartz, "Users will continue to experience search as a vital part of their Yahoo! experiences and will enjoy increased innovation thanks to the scale and resources this deal provides. Advertisers will also benefit from scale and enjoy greater ease of use and efficiencies working with a single platform and sales team for premium advertisers. Finally, this deal will help us increase our investments in priority areas in winning audience properties, display advertising capabilities and mobile experiences."

Do you think the new Bing - Yahoo! deal will give Google a run for their money, or will Google remain the King of search engines? Leave a comment and let us know what you think!

Bing's Click-Through Rates Beat Google's

July 28, 2009 - Search advertising network, Chitika is releasing the results of a new study on how search engines are performing via their ad click-through rates and Bing has emerged as the winner over Google (via Mediapost).

According to the study, Internet users who arrive at websites through organic searches on Bing are 55% more likely to click on an advertisement versus those who arrived on the same website via Google's search engine. The study covered ad click-through rates from 32 million impressions over 50,000 websites during a 1 week period in July.

Bing came out on top with a 1.5% average of users clicking on ads, with .97% rate attributed to Google and 1.24% for Yahoo. Experts believe some of these numbers can be attributed to Bing's gigantic ad campaign and think Bing still has a long way to go to retain Internet users from returning to Google in the long-run.

Recession Leading to More Searches, Internet Usage

July 16, 2009 - A new report released by Pew Internet & American Life Project reveals that more Americans are turning to media consumption like TV and the Internet during the recession. The study also found that during the current economic recession, more people are using the Internet and search engines to locate information on how to adjust to the floundering economy and other resources to help them get back on their feet.

An impressive 31% of online users reported using search engines and the Internet to get more information about the current economic crisis during the past year.  TV consumption is also increasing according to Nielsen's Council for Research Excellence.

Perhaps Americans have more time on their hands these days due to the hundreds of thousands of layoffs that have occurred over the past year, or perhaps they are looking to entertainment as an escape, or just using the Internet as a research tool. Most likely, it is a combination of all these factors, but what online marketers need to understand from this research is that there is a market -- even in a down market.

By creating SEO content to appeals to these searches, you can continue to drive traffic to your websites and actively engage your readers while enhancing your search engine rankings.

For more information on this new media research, read the entire article on Mediapost.

Is Crowdsourcing Good for SEO?

July 14, 2009 - The idea of "crowdsourcing", the act of letting large groups of users perform a task that is usually reserved for a single agent of group, is getting a lack of traction lately. When it comes to social media, crowdsourcing can help online marketers spread word-of-mouth advertising or generate new marketing ideas (through polls, surveys, etc.), but while crowdsourcing has some great merits - community involvement, corporate interaction with customers, free input, etc. is there a limit to what crowdsourcing should be used for?

Search Engine Watch released an article about how crowdsourcing projects like translation (Linkedin polled for translation volunteers recently) could affect the SEO keywords for a website. When it comes to SEO content in general, strategy is key. Analyzing, deciding on, and implementing SEO keywords and long-tail phrases that will benefit your website is something that needs to be a conscious act.

While crowdsourcing can be a great indicator of where your SEO content needs to go and perhaps what kind of content your readers would find enjoyable, it may not be the project you want to leave in the hands of unexperienced volunteers, the costs may prove too costly in the long run.

When does crowdsourcing go from helpful to inhibiting? Leave a comment and tell us what you think!

New Tool for Yahoo Search

July 7, 2009 - In an attempt to lure Internet searchers away from Google (and perhaps Bing as well), #2 search engine Yahoo is introducing a Yahoo Search Pad annotation tool that will allow users to save their search the organize information they search for on Yahoo.

According to Mediapost, the new search tool will allow users to automatically save their search engine results to the notepad while also allowing them to "add notes, cut-and-paste text, and share collected information with others via email and other means"

The pad is supposed to prompt itself automatically when it notices that a user is performing a lot of research on the search engine and will then begin happily adding links and thumbnails as you continue your search.

Only time will tell if this new search tool will help Yahoo steal some of Google's steam.
