Create Relevant SEO Content From News Headlines

September 14, 2009 - Finding ways to add SEO content to your website can be as easy as keeping up with the world around you. In preparation for Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October), Ask.com is going pink and teaming up with the Susan G Komen Foundation.

While not all businesses will be able to partner with large scale charities or create a giant campaign, events like Breast Cancer Awareness month, Women's History Month, current events, and major news headlines can give you the opportunity to create content for your website or blog that is not only time relevant, but picks up on hot topics and keywords people will be searching for.

What's important is to focus on the news and events that make sense to your business. Retailers that focus on beauty supplies or women's wear/accessories can use events like the Academy Awards, Grammys, and other award shows to compare fashion highlights and provide tips. A lawyer can discuss their opinions on a big trial being followed by CNN or the New York Times. Find areas that will interest your readers and create your own niche inside that topic.

Great SEO content is out there just waiting for you to write it!

Having search engine optimized copy makes it easy for search engines to find your Web pages. If your website doesn't have the top search engine ranking on Google, We Do Web Content can help boost your web marketing goals. We Do Web Content takes pride in producing high-quality and affordable SEO web copy that is clean, consistent, and formatted for Internet marketing. Use SEO Content to Save Money on Customer Service

September 8, 2009 - Customer service is truly the backbone of any company whether they are brick and mortar or ecommerce only. While you may need a call center to handle questions and orders, the last thing you want is having your customer service representatives spending all their time explaining basic components of your company, versus ringing up sales.

That's where great SEO content can step in. The more relevant information you have on your website about how your company operates, your return and shipping policies, product information, and the like in an easily searchable and readable area of your website, the more money you can save on customer service calls to frequently address these concerns. Now don't get me wrong, people will always have questions, and even if you provide clear and valuable answers to every question you have ever been asked about your business on your website, people will still call with questions if you give them the option.

However, if you can address the majority of those concerns through your Frequently Asked Questions, or other SEO keyword infused content pages, you can significantly decrease the amount of time your CSR's spend on the phone answering those same questions over and over again.

SEO Content Should = Relevant Information

SEO content by design serves the main purpose of informing your customers. Does your website contain most of the relevant content necessary for your potential client to make an informed purchase, or are basic elements missing your website that forces those customers to email you, call, or just leave for another website that does provide clearer information?

If your customer service reps keep telling you they are being asked the same thing over and over again, and that information does not exist anywhere on your website (or is not easily findable), it's time start looking at your SEO content and the overall organization of your website.

The Basics of SEO Content

September 8, 2009 - I was reading an article in Mediapost this morning that went into the sad state of affairs huge numbers of websites are currently facing -- they can't write basic content.

Writing is indeed an art form. It takes years of practice to be able to write content that balances information with interest, the type of content that mixes personality and style with information that is easily understandable, relevant, grammatically correct, and linkable.

The content that exists on your website should be search engine optimized to compete with other organic search engine results, but even in its most basic form, content needs to exist on your website and it must reflect the following:
  • The content must be relevant to your website, meaning the blogs, articles, FAQs, etc. focus on elements of your business and industry
  • Content must be grammatically correct, free of typos and misspelled words, and if intended for American readers, written in proper English with the correct use of idioms and common phrases (a VERY common mistake in content that is outsourced to India or the Philippines)
  • The content needs to clearly communicate complete ideas, but not overdo it. Topics on niche subjects may require more than just a few short sentences while other topics should be split up into several pieces of content (and edited!) if they are several thousand words
  • Your website's content is a clear reflection of how people view your company. If your content is uninformative, boring, full of typos, written by someone without a clear grasp of the English language (once again, for American audiences), too short or way too long, no one will take your website seriously, buy your products or link to your pages.

If you do not possess the writing skills or time to create the SEO content for your website, We Do Web Content is here to provide our expertise and advice to help your website grow. If you are taking your website's content into your own hands, just make sure you are giving your content the attention to detail it demands.

Starbucks Launches iPhone App

September - 23, 2009 - Do you like bitter, overpriced coffee? There's an App for that!

Corporate coffee megabrand Starbucks has just launched a new app, myStarbucks, that will allow fans to find locations (cause those Starbucks are soo hard to find!), build drinks, check out the snack menu, and even get nutritional information about their favorite mocha, caramel-drizzled delights from the comfort of their mobile phone. Sounds like the right move for the company (all the big brands are building apps these days), but nothing too extraordinary.

However, a second app, called Starbucks Mobile Card, will actually allow users (in Seattle and Silicon Valley for now) to pay for their drinks. According to ReadWriteWeb, the Starbucks mobile payment app is still in the test phase, hence why it is only available in 2 test markets, but if this little endeavor catches on, you can expect a lot of new apps that can let you buy more tangible goods (instead of just virtual ones) with your iPhone.

Facebook Strikes Again -- FB Growth Doubles Twitter's in July

August 13, 2009 - It certainly seems like Facebook week, especially with all the recent headlines about Facebook purchases, launches, and redesigns, but it looks like FB is on the right track because they grew twice as much as Twitter did in the month of July (via TechCrunch).

According to comScore, Facebook brought in 87.7 million unique US visitors in July (a 14% increase from June), easily beating out Twitter's 21.2 million unique US visitors (a 6% increase from June). In fact, Facebook's giant numbers actually moved them from the 6th largest web media property in the US to the 5th largest.

Although it is important to note however that this study only looked at folks entering Twitter.com, not those who use mobile and desktop applications like Tweetdeck or Tweetie.

Check out the entire article on TechCrunch for more numbers and charts.

Are You Archiving Your Tweets?

August 13, 2009 - While tweets never actually disappear, they do become unsearchable after a certain length of time and that amount of time in shortening due to Twitter's growing popularity. That means that a Twitter post you wrote only a few weeks ago is probably already unfindable through search.twitter.com.

Luckily, the good folks over at ReadWriteWeb have compiled a super handy list of how to archive your tweets and make sure every precious word you send out to Twitter can be easily located for your research, data-collecting, and other organizational purposes.

The best part is that the suggestions work through different platforms so if you want to archive your tweets in your calendar, through WordPress, RSS feeds, Outlook, and so on, you have a lot of options available.

Check out the list and find your own perfect tweet archiving method.

Grab Your Cameras! 1/3 of Online Videos are Shared

August 6, 2009 - A recent collaboration study by Yahoo, Interpet LLC, Warner Bros. Media research, Havas Digital, and Omnicom's PHD have found some great information about the popularity of online videos (via Mediapost).

Among other things, the new study found that 1/3 of all videos posted online are shared, a very inspiring number for marketers looking to break into the online video world. Even more impressive is that those who watch online videos are twice as likely to ignore TV ads online but 28% to pay attention to online advertising.

In fact, over 1/4 of the study's resondents said they visted the company website of a brand after viewing a "high engagement" online video.

If your company isn't creating videos yet or working on an online marketing strategy that includes online videos, you could be missing out on some amazing branding and traffic opportunities.

Tumblr - Simple Blogs Get Big

August 5, 2009
- Tumblr may easily become my new favorite blogging site. The free blogging service has a ton of great features, can be updated from anywhere, and is apparently "taking over the world."

An article published in Mashable states that Tumblr blogs received a very impressive 255 million pageviews in July alone, a number that is expected to grow to 330 million page impressions in August.

The numbers, provided by Quantcast, speak to Tumblr's popularity, but the site's ease of use, ample themes to choose from, and overall versatility makes Tumblr pretty easy to fall in love with.

Here are few more giant Tumblr stats from the Quantcast study:
  • 650,000 posts per day
  • 5,000 new users daily
  • 1.5 reblogged posts per second
  • 50 million visitors over the last 30 days

Malware Targets SlideShare

August 5, 2009 - Popular slideshow presentation service, SlideShare is the most recent big name social media resources to get attacked by virus writers who want to spread malware links.

According to a new report in ReadWriteWeb, security firm ESET are credited with discovering the malware in fake slide decks. Similar malware tactics have been discovered on Twitter, Facebook, email and even instant messaging.

The idea behind attacking Slideshare was to trick unsuspecting Internet users into clicking on a slide deck with a link to a malware website. Luckily these issues were caught early on, but it isn't likely that the malware attacks will stop here.

SlideShare allows people to upload slide show presentations to the Internet to use at conferences, web meetings, blogs, and other occasions where you would hypothetically want or need to share a slide show presentation with other people without having to deal with discs, flash drives, and other set-up issues.

When developing an online marketing strategy it is important that you select a company that has Internet marketing experience, which includes copywriting, SEO services, and website promotion. Twitter Begins Filtering Malicious Links

August 3, 2009 - Ever since the media began discussing the merits of Twitter non-stop, businesses have been gravitating towards the social networking site to share their news, promotions, and links with fans and potential customers. As is always the case, not all of those businesses have people's best interests at heart and spammers have been just as busy sending links to malware websites through tweets, sometimes even hacking into trusted users' accounts.

To help keep Twitter running smoothly, the site has adopted a new filtering system that will attempt to catch malicious links by including the warning, "Your Tweet contained a URL to a known malware site!" when a user tries to post such a link into a tweet. Unfortauntely, the great flaw of the project thus far is that the filter does not work with shortened URLs, which are immensely more common than full links due to the 140 character nature of Twitter posts.

Thankfully, Bit.Ly, Twitter's URL shortener of choice, does some filtering of their own and reacts quickly to reports of shortened links to spam websites, but Twitter still has an uphill battle ahead if they want to stay on top of the spammers and keep Twitter users from becoming too frustrated with the service and abandoning their profiles.

For more information about the Twitter filtering project, check out the entire article in Mashable.

Facebook Named "Least Intuitive" Website

July 31, 2009 - While there are lots of reasons to love Facebook, the popular social networking platform is far from perfect in both usability and design. Slate magazine published a great article detailing some of the most painful Facebook problems from inbox issues to the basic design flaw of never being able to find your own information easily or intuitively.

In fact, when Facebook launched its last major redesign in March, over 1 million people responded to an online poll asking users about Facebook's new look and feel, and 94% of those users hated the new design. Slate even goes so far as to name Facebook, "one of the world's most-annoying, least-intuitve websites".

Here are some highlights (which I whole-heartedly agree with):

Groups: It's almost impossible to find the groups you belong to, since you need to click on the incredibly vague "info" tab then 2 other links just to see your groups list in its entirity.

Photos: There are 3 different areas of your Facebook profile labeled "Photos" that take you to 3 different pages. WHY??

Inbox: It's impossible to sort messages, forward them, put them in folders, archive older messages, or essentially do anything other than reply immediately to the sender, since if you receive a lot of messages, the older ones get pushed down to obscurity.

Hopefully the Slate article and the many complaints by users that have come before (and will come after), will inspire Facebook to take on these projects, remove the bugs, and get some of the user-friendly-ness back that it had in its infancy. After all, and as the Slate piece reminds us, MySpace was #1 until Facebook came along with its easy to use, cleaner format, and if they don't get these kind of basic usability issues fixed, another social network will come around that does.

Email 3.0 Almost a Reality

July 30, 2009 - A recent article in Mediapost discussed just how close we are to the email of the future (aka - Email 3.0), an email that would not only deliver the typical letter style emails are we accustomed to, but include a mix of social networking, instant messages, widgets, news feeds, and more to turn our inboxes into a one-stop Web portal where we could organize and manager all of important online information from a single location.

The Google Wave, which should be ready for public consumption by Sept (at least the Beta version), and Microsoft's Outlook 2010 are the first major pushes into this new exciting time for the evolution of email. Pretty cool, right? Well, for most people yes, yet just like any other new Internet innovation, online marketers will have to put their thinking caps back on to see how they can adapt their strategies and services in light of this new way consumers will be processing and accessing their information.

When developing an online marketing strategy it is important that you select a company that has Internet marketing experience, which includes copywriting, SEO services, and website promotion. Did Tetris Change the Way We View News?

July 24, 2009 - As part of the 25th anniversary of Tetris, whose addictive simplicity resulted in millions of hours of gloriously wasted time, everyone seems to be looking for a new angle as to how Tetris is responsible for shaping everything that came after.

Max Kalehoff published his version of how Tetris changed everything on Mediapost this morning, and I can where he is going. He does a pretty interesting job of creating an analogy between Tetris's "stream" of blocks that users had to piece together in a puzzle-like fashion, with how Internet users and mobile fans currently digest breaking news in streams of content that then get organized by category and so on.

A bit of a stretch perhaps, but a really plausible effort, and I think a pretty funny take on the Tetris phenomenon.

July 22, 2009 -  When it comes to discovering a cool new video, website, online article, etc. email was always the preferred method of sharing information with friends online. AddtoAny, the creators of the one of the most popular widgets around for letting consumers share stories and info across multiple social media networks, is releasing new information that says Facebook is now #1 in online sharing (via Mashable).

AddtoAny reports that Facebook now has 24% of sharing via their widget as opposed to the 11.1% via email and 10.8% through Twitter. The article goes onto state that if you add up all of Yahoo's properties (Delicious, Yahoo Bookmarks, Yahoo Buzz, and Yahoo Messenger), it equals 14% of sharing, moving email even further down the list.

How-to Videos Latest YouTube Sensation

July 21, 2009 - According to a new report by Mediapost, the latest YouTube sensation isn't cute videos of kittens playing with cardboard boxes, it's instructional videos showing people how to apply make-up.

Several YouTube users are generating hundreds of thousands, and sometimes millions of views, from people looking for advice on how to apply make-up professionally or look like their favorite performers. In fact, these make-up videos are now the largest growing category of Yout=Tube videos, with some users attracting more than 200,000 subscribers.

This new trend just goes to show how people are responding online to videos that combine pitching products (many of these videos promote specific brands and include advertising banners, etc) with practical information on how best to use them. Online marketers should take note. Considering online video is only growing by the minute, creating short, fun, informational videos that highlight your products and how consumers how to make the most of them can be a great way to drive traffic to your website and introduce thousands of potential customers to your brand.

Mommy bloggers schedule a break from PR

Mommy bloggers (moms who blog about everything related to parenting from "Hairstyles for girls" to potty training) are atwitter this week after MomDot blogger, Trisha Haas, called for a week off from public relations work on mom blogs.

According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, Ms. Haas issued a "PR Blackout challenge" for one week in August to give moms (and their readers) a break from the product plugging that has become commonplace on many mom blogs.

Haas is encouraging her fellow mommy bloggers to get back to basics and discuss children, marriage, homes, etc., for one week rather than, say, accent furniture.

The PR Blackout challenge has created quite the controversy in the mommy blogger set - with some mommies arguing that they need the income provided by companies they write reviews for, or simply that they enjoy the freebies sent to them.

Read more about the mommy blogger PR blackout challenge.

Twitter's Free Media = $48 Million

July 20, 2009 - I know here at We Do Web Content, we personally write a lot about Twitter. Whether it's new applications, programs, hype, etc. Twitter is constantly in the news and clearly we're far from the only company to publish a running commentary on Twitter's real-time happenings.

So how does all this media attention affect Twitter. Well it saves them millions of dollars in advertising costs for one. Adage recently published a story that calculates that had Twitter been forced to pay for all the media attention they have received through TV mentions, radio, magazines and the like, they would have had to fork over $48 million in the last 30 days alone.

The article reports that Twitter received nearly 3 billion hits in the last month, and a good portion of those hits came courtesy of TV (an estimated 57% of the PR value), 37% from major newspapers, and 5% from magazine. Since the study that revealed these numbers did not include Twitter mentions from smaller publications, the real number of potential advertising costs could be much much higher.

Twitter received 21 million unique visitors in June, a 14% increase over May. Coincidence? Probably not.
