Web Content Development: Keep Your Visitor's Goals in Mind

Deciding what SEO content to include on your website should be based on research and thoughtful consideration. The good news is that since search engines love and expect a constant influx of fresh content, you'll always have the opportunity to add specific topics to your content library. The best strategy to begin thinking about topics to cover in your SEO content however, is even simpler, just start putting yourself in your visitor's shoes.

Do You Have Enough FAQs?

August 10, 2009 - People often neglect the FAQ (frequently asked questions) section of their website, if they even have one at all. FAQs are really important for your website for several reasons:

1. They give valuable information to your visitors about your services, products, company policies, and so on.
2. They are great SEO content opportunities that help increase your website's search engine results and page rankings.

What Should I Write About in My FAQs?

The great part about SEO content is that it builds your website's credibility along with your organic search results. FAQs are SEO opportunities waiting to happen. After all, your potential clients might not understand a lot about your business, even when they know they require your services.

For example, many people may find themselves in need of a bankruptcy lawyer, but probably don't understand a lot about bankruptcy law. The FAQ section of a bankruptcy lawyer's website could have several FAQS that define important terms and processes the average person might be completely unfamiliar with. They can discuss pricing guide lines, how the laws in their state affect bankruptcy proceedings, what people can expect as they go through various bankruptcy proceedings, and so on.

This way, your potential client gets the information they are looking for to help them make the most informed choice possible, they are already on your website which drastically increases your chance of this visitor becoming a great lead, and the information from your FAQ will show up in organic search results, which will drive more potential clients to your website overall.

It's also remember to keep in mind that FAQS can be added constantly. There are always new questions that need to be answers, policies that can be explained, information to be shared. If your website only has 6 or 7 FAQs, just think of all the SEO content possibilities you are missing out on.

It's a win-win all around. So when was the last time you added a new FAQ to your website?

Having search engine optimized copy makes it easy for search engines to find your Web pages. News Corp Sees Paid Model as Future of Online Content

July 27, 2009 - News Corp., the owners of the Times in London, Wall Street Journal, and social media network, Myspace, has plans to increase their revenue by charging their readers for access to online content including news and entertainment, according to a new report from Bloomberg.

Jonathan Miller, News Corp.'s chief digital officer, announced that the Web "will become a have and have not world" where online companies will be producing Web content that customers will either be willing to pay for or they won't. News Corp. currently charges customers a susbcription fee to view their online newspapers, but seems to have plans that will result in additional future charges for viewing online articles as they see the Internet as moving further towards becoming a "paid model" when it comes to news publishing.

Myspace, the currently free but fading social media network that recently laid off 30% of its workforce in June, is increasing the amount of ads present on the site and are now planning to insert those ads "deeper into the site in creative ways," according to Courtney Holt, the head of Myspace Music.

It's a wait and see game at this point to decide how best to keep journalism on the web accessible and profitable, as well as how the move to monetize certain online content will affect other website's search engine results for similar news content and who will come out on top.

Google Caffeine Set to Launch

November 10, 2009 - The great Google Caffeine rollout, an event promised to take place over the last few months, is finally set to leave the sandbox and start infiltrating your search engine results.

Google CaffeineFor those of you unfamiliar with this major change, Google Caffeine is the new Google index with an adjusted algorithm, that will change the way the search engine giants filters its search results. The program has been in a preview sandbox for the last few months so website developers and curious techies could see how their websites would appear on the new Google platform.

Some websites will receive better search engine results and some will do worse, that's just the nature of a changing index. Since Google loves to keep webmasters guessing as to the specifics of their criteria, we don't know exactly what info is shifting importance or to what extent. For now at least, the best SEO advice is to continue producing quality, relevant content that incorporates your most valued keywords and phrases.

Google Caffeine will be rolled out in phases to various data centers over the next few months until the whole index is universally live, or until enough people complain and Google sends it back to the drawing board. So don't worry if you don't see those new results for quite awhile.

Have you tested Google Caffeine? If so, leave a comment and let us know what you think!

Google Launches Social Search Through Google Labs

October 27, 2009 - Social media is everywhere, even in your Google search results through Social Search, the new Google feature currently available in Google Labs that will allow users to pull relevant data from their friends' social networks.

In order for the feature to work you'll need to logged in to your Google account. From there, Google will pull data from your contacts and friends, identifying their social networks (Flickr, Google Reader subscriptions, blogs, Twitter, etc) and providing you with a separate and sorted "Social Results" that are selected based on keywords and relevant information.

For example, if you type in a search query for Halloween Costumes, you may see a separate box at the bottom of your search page titled "Results from people in your social circle for Halloween Costumes", which can theoretically pull a blog post from your friend about their Halloween costume, a Twitter post from another friend who tweeted a link to cute Halloween Costumes, a Flickr account of a contact that has a photo album titled Halloween Costumes, and so on.

It's a pretty cool idea, and since Google Social Search only pulls public data from your contacts there isn't any weird privacy issues and you won't be bombarded with lots of posts from strangers, ala a traditional real-time search.

Just to avoid any confusion, Google Social Search is a completely separate entity from the Google/Twitter search deal, which will allow tweets to show up in relevant Google searches.

SEO Keywords: More Than Just a Guessing Game

August 24, 2009 - When we work with new clients at We Do Web Content, we always talk to them about their SEO keywords, if they have any already identified, what they want to focus on, and then we do a keyword analysis of our own to determine the best fit for each company's SEO content, based on their business and needs.

Sometimes, the keywords clients give us are great, others aren't actually keywords... but try telling them that. On more than one occassion a client will give us a keyword they want to focus on. Through our own research, we'll sometimes find that not only is that keyword not highly searched, but it isn't even a real term, so the idea of someone eventually searching for it are slim to none. And of course we're not talking about the name of a new product or brand that of course wouldn't be highly searched for until it is introduced (at least), but descriptive phrases that if they were reworded into actual existing phrases, would yield search engine results.

And amazingly sometimes, even when we tell our clients those terms don't exist in the English vernacular and no one is searching for them, they insist that they are used. All I can say to this is that companies should focus on SEO keywords that strengthen their SEO efforts, not bog them down by telling search spiders to pay special attention to non-existent goobeldy-goo that no one has or will ever search for.

SEO keywords need to be well thought out and chosen with a purpose. They are there to bring your SEO content into the limelight. Think about what keywords will target your ideal audience, what phrasings will be relevant to both your business and what potential customers are searching for. Don't get too hung up on coining silly phrases that will never overtake a better, more widely recognized term.

Having search engine optimized copy makes it easy for search engines to find your Web pages. If your website doesn't have the top search engine ranking on Google, We Do Web Content can help boost your web marketing goals. Snapshot: Are You Including Images with Your SEO Content? You Should!

August 17, 2009 - The latest search research says people are turning to images more and more, both as a part of SEO content and through image searches (via Mediapost).

Google and Microsoft are both reporting that people are conducting more image searches online as well choosing content that contains also contains an image in search results, and that consumers spend more time on pages that include images with their text.

According to one study by Microsoft, it takes the average Internet user 20% less time to understand the content on any given page when accompanied by an image. Microsoft also found that 40% of overall image queries relate to commercial websites, inlcuding travel and shopping.

Besides boosting your search engine results, including images with your SEO content is a great way to heighten the visual appeal of your website and give consumers some insight into your products. So get those cameras out and give your website an image overhaul.

Why Hyperlinks Help Your Website

August 11, 2009 - We've had a lot of conversations with new and potential clients about how the SEO content services at We Do Web Content can help websites get better page rankings and lead to more conversions through great informative web content, SEO keywords, and linking strategies.

Often times, when we mention how important it is for SEO content to link to other websites, there is a pause and then a quick, "well...we don't want our customers to leave our website," reply. There are a lot of reasons to include hyperlinks in your SEO content, and if it is done correctly, customers will stay on your website LONGER.

Hyperlinks Should Work For You, Not Against You

Hyperlinks exist to help readers fully understand your SEO content. There may be terms they are unfamiliar with that a simple link to Wikipedia or WebMD or a legal dictionary can fix. If you don't provide EASY access to this information from your website, they will leave it and continue the research on their own elsewhere. When you provide a hyperlink that opens in a second window or tab, the reader stays on your website, gets the quick info they need and then returns to your article.

Hyperlinks help build page rankings
and affect your search engine results by adding the quality of those links to the overall quality rating of your SEO content. Without any links, you are losing out on opportunities that can help increase your search engine rankings.

Hyperlinks should be always be helpful. Sometimes I think when people hear the word "link" they are under the impression that the links will lead to competitor's websites and cause them to lose business. If that was the case, that might be true, but I don't know of any company that uses hyperlinks in their SEO content to link to competing websites.

Hyperlinks are great for explaining complicated terms that would be too lengthy to spell out in an article, and direct readers to additional resources (including the home pages of organizations within that field) i.e. - a website for an auto body shop might have a link to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in an article about car accidents. This is not a competing website but provides great information for that reader about car safety.

Don't be afraid of links. When hyperlinks are well thought out, relevant to your SEO content, and not leading readers to competitve or spam websites, they are great boosts for your web pages.

Having search engine optimized copy makes it easy for search engines to find your Web pages. If your website doesn't have the top search engine ranking on Google, We Do Web Content can help boost your web marketing goals. We Do Web Content takes pride in producing high-quality and affordable SEO web copy that is clean, consistent, and formatted for Internet marketing. Are Your Making the Most of Your SEO Keywords?

August 7, 2009 - SEO content relies heavily on use of relevant SEO keywords that help drive traffic to your website through organic search engine results. It's important for any business to identify and successfully implement the keywords that will help customers locate their products and services online, both locally (if the business has a brick and mortar location or is limited to any given area) and on a broad scale to attract potential customers from across the Internet.

After you have identified the SEO keywords that best match your business, the next step is to incorporate them into the content that makes up your website, including:

  • articles
  • landing pages
  • home page
  • FAQs
  • blogs
  • product and service descriptions
  • and so on

It's also important however, to include your keywords outside of your website. Many businesses overlook the importance of using their keywords in social media profiles or other online public forums that exist outside of their main website. Remember, posts on social media networks like Facebook and Twitter will appear in search engine results if the relevant keywords are there, so make the most of all your content -- put your SEO keywords where they count (everywhere!).

Just remember, keyword density (the amount of times a keyword appears in a single piece of content) is a major factor in the overall success of your SEO content. Use your keywords too often and they seem like spam to search engines, don't use them enough and your results show up too far down the search results page. Aim for a keyword density that sees your keyword appear about once every hundred words or so and try not to bunch several keywords together with commas separating them (they also look like spam to search engines).

New Tool for Yahoo Search

July 7, 2009 - In an attempt to lure Internet searchers away from Google (and perhaps Bing as well), #2 search engine Yahoo is introducing a Yahoo Search Pad annotation tool that will allow users to save their search the organize information they search for on Yahoo.

According to Mediapost, the new search tool will allow users to automatically save their search engine results to the notepad while also allowing them to "add notes, cut-and-paste text, and share collected information with others via email and other means"

The pad is supposed to prompt itself automatically when it notices that a user is performing a lot of research on the search engine and will then begin happily adding links and thumbnails as you continue your search.

Only time will tell if this new search tool will help Yahoo steal some of Google's steam.

Spezify.com Launches a New View on Search

Visual search takes on a whole new meaning with the launch of Spezify.com, which creators describe as a "tool" rather than a search engine, that can retrieve search engine results from Amazon, Yahoo, eBay, and Twitter among other sources.

Mediapost reports that the new website pulls indexed content from "hundreds of sources", with the exception of Google, which has design rules that prohibit others from changing the order of their search engine results. Searchers using Spezify will receive the "top 10 to 50 lines of queries from each site" and will have the option to click on a related search term to delve deeper into their topic. Users also have the option of limiting or expanding their search results as well as focusing specifically on images, text, or video.

Sweden-baed creators Ekenstam and Persson view the free search tool as an application for people who don't necessarily know what they looking for, but are more interested in discovering new information.

Check out Spezify.com and let us know what you think of this new form of "visual search".
