Botox May Soon Be Approved for Migraine Relief

Currently, Botox is approved by the FDA to treat excessive underarm sweating (hyperhidrosis), cervical dystonia and certain nerve disorders. Botox Cosmetic is approved for the temporary treatment of moderate to severe frown lines and wrinkles.

Botox injections are not currently approved for the treatment of migraine headaches, but there are indications that this may be changing in the near future. According to the American Chronicle, Allergan, the maker of Botox, released its second-quarter earning statements on July 31, 2009. In those statements, Allergan remarked that they had given the FDA results from two phase III clinical trials on Botox treatment for migraines.

Allergen also says that they intend to file an application with the FDA by the end of the third quarter of 2009. This indicates that Botox may soon be approved to treat migraines, which would be welcome news to the millions of Americans who suffer from debilitating migraine headaches each year.

Some sufferers have already reported that off-label use of Botox has brought dramatic relief for their condition. Sarah Hartley, the health editor of the Daily Mail, says that she has been migraine-free for over a month after receiving Botox treatments.
