Lawyer Advertising - Jewish American Bar Association

This one hits locally for us - right down the street at the Broward County Courthouse, to be precise! A bus bench ad advertising the importance of hiring a Jewish lawyer has caught the attention of many local attorneys who ended up lobbying for the ad to be taken down.

It wasn't a discrimination issue, but rather many Jewish lawyers themselves cited fears that such an advertisement would cause the perpetuation of negative stereotypes. The director of the Jewish American Bar Association, located in Boca Raton, says the ad was intended to create a network of lawyers with the same goals and purpose.

Richard Sachs, the president of the B'nai B'rith Justice Unit of Broward County, disagrees with the campaign and fears that it causes people to think that Jewish lawyers regard themselves as better than non-Jewish attorneys. While the JABA claims they do allow non-Jewish membership, their advertisement and registration as a lawyer referral service is under review by the Florida Bar.

Time to get serious now, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Organizations across the US are stepping up with fundraisers, walks for the cure, and other special events to help raise money for this disease that accounts for 1 in 4 cancers diagnosed in U.S. women.
