Goby Search Engine Focuses on Events, Times, and Locations

Goby.com helps visitors find things to do in their area, including specific times, dates, and locations of events, filling in a large and necessary niche in the search engine market. According to an article published in Mediapost profiling the new company (which only launched last month):

Mark Watkins, the engine's co-founder, calls the Web crawler "smart" because the algorithms organize, structure and categorize the data, so when someone comes to the engine and types "haunted house" or "hiking trails" in the "What would you like to do" search query, the engine spits out specific destinations. Add entries in "Where?" and "When?' to get locations and times.

The creators of Goby admit that the search engine doesn't crawl the entire web, but that's also partly why Goby is successful (no information overload), and the sites they do crawl are scanned about once a week. Being so new, it's hard to say whether or not Goby will really take off, or even the quality of its findings, but the prospect of a search engine that focuses clearly on the very issues that search engine giants like Bing and Google do not, gives them a big boost of relevancy that could spell a runaway hit.
