Google’s Shotguns are aimed at Content Farms

cf

February 28, 2011 - If you've ever published content from a "content farm" on your website or blog, you're going to want to clear that content off your site real fast - Google's gunning for you now!

Run for the hills, content farmers!

No, you don't have to worry about the Internet police knocking at your door for using low-quality, duplicate content on your website. In fact, you won't have to worry about anyone seeing your content because your page rank is slated to drop rapidly as Google rolls out new search algorithms set to penalize websites with "content farm" style duplicate content.

While the popular search engine doesn't like to share the details of its latest behind the scenes tweaks, they did mention that the change may impact as many as 11.8% of their queries in the U.S. What this means is that sites that have copied and pasted content found on multiple websites - which is usually a sign they bought their content from a content farm - will rank lower, since content like that is usually the sign of a low-value site.

So what can you do if you've ventured down the path of the content farm in the past, but want to clean up your act? Start by contacting We Do Web Content! We can review your current website and blog content and discuss the changes necessary to keep you in Google's good graces and improve your Internet marketing through 100% original, custom Web content.

We can't stress enough that the key to a successful Internet marketing system is to populate your website and blogs with unique, quality content. Not only is this is the best, most ethical way to get high rankings on search engine result pages but it's also an excellent method of converting readers to clients. When you offer the relevant information your potential clients are searching for they're more likely to spend extra time on your website and convert to happy clients!

At We Do Web Content each piece of content we write is 100% original, written by a real person with your business and customized keywords in mind. We take the time to get to know your industry and your unique marketing plan to make sure that the content we produce targets your ideal audience.

Hello Jim and thank you for your comment.

While it’s difficult to say how Google’s new algorithm will pan out, we can shed some light on what the search engine might look at when determining whether your site is a “content farm” or not. We can also give you some tips on how to avoid being labeled as such.

First, it appears that most of the websites Google is considering a content farm have these attributes in common:

• They house heavily optimized short articles (generally 250-300 words long) about anything and everything. Often times, exceed Google’s prescribed keyword density ratio of 2-3% per 100 words.

• They cover every possible topic under the sun in an effort to capture visitors for every foreseeable search term being used on the Internet. And because their articles are so short, they are often very repetitive and very basic. This almost always produces a low quality article. “Content farms” are more focused on quantity vs. quality.

• They are flooded with advertisements (lots of traffic = lots of eyes on ads= $$$ to advertisers).

• The content doesn’t offer many—or any—outbound links to other credible websites.

So, here are a few tips for avoiding the dreaded and deadly label of a content farm:

• Focus your site on one general topic and then really delve into the many relative sub-topics that make up the general topic.

• Definitely optimize your content—after all, you do want—and need—your content to be found for relative search terms—but make sure you are writing for the human reader above all. It’s a delicate balance, but it can be done with some forethought.

• Make your articles a bit longer (400-500 words) so you can really go into a topic and offer links to other internal or external articles that will go deeper into the subject.

And…remember, Google is constantly updating their algorithms – this one will be no exception. As they see that some of the legitimate websites are being affected, they will adjust the formula as necessary. Bottom line is if you’re playing by Google’s rules, you shouldn’t jump to alter everything on your website this second. Give them some time to perfect the formula.

We hope this helps!

Best,

I write all my own content. Because I am selling my writing skills, among other things, I could not consider using "farm raised" content, even if I was so inclined. But, I do publish my articles and proliferate my educational videos across a wide variety of article publishing sites and video outlets. It occurs to me that unless google has some way of relating this content back to me as the original source, it's new algorithm might conclude that my website is just one of many that are using the content. I'm new in my marketplace, and my rankings need to be going up, not down. Do you think google's new algorithm will hurt folks who generate their own content and publish it on a wide variety of outlets?
