Happy Labor Day! Get Seasonal!

Labor Day is one of the United States federal holidays where government offices, banks, and many companies are closed in observance. It was founded back in 1882 on September 5^th and continues to be celebrated on the first Monday of September every year.

The holiday began as an answer to the unrest among union workers and government after the 1894 Pullman Strike. This clash between the U.S. military and U.S. marshals with union workers in Pullman, IL led to the deaths of 13 strikers and 57 injuries. The incident involved 3,000 union workers against over 12,000 U.S. Army troops and state marshals.

Following these incidents, President Grover Cleveland started an initiative to put reconciliation with labor unions as a top priority and signed Labor Day into law as a national holiday 6 days after the end of the strike. The law set forth not only the celebration date, but also a guideline for events. A street parade followed by a festival for workers and their families was the initial format for Labor Day celebrations.

These traditions continue in towns and cities across America during what is now called "Labor Day Weekend" for the 3-day timeframe. Many consider it to be the end of summer, as the weather in many parts of the U.S. begins to cool and children return to school. Another related seasonal change is the start of U.S. football season, with the first games of NCAA and NFL taking place before and after Labor Day weekend, respectively.
