New TLD for Green Websites .Eco

 August 4, 2009 - When choosing a website's top-level domain (TLDs), most companies stick with the usual .com, .net, .org, and the like. Former VP Al Gore, the Sierra Club, and other green-centric groups are fighting for a new TLD to enter into the arena: .eco.

Dot Eco is still in the process of applying for a top level domain, which aims to carry the green message and back it up with action, including donating 50% of the profits generated through Dot Eco websites to non-profit and environmental causes as well as providing non-profits with free web addresses, and allowing for-profit companies to support green initiatives through their domain fees.

All TLDs must be approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), but Dot Eco is hoping that a roster of high profile names and the green community (who are known for their grassroots campaigning) will help get them off the ground and onto the Internet.
