Twitter Now World’s Fastest Growing…Search Engine?

July 7, 2010 - Move over, Google, Yahoo and Bing, Twitter just flew past you. According to Twitter co-founder Biz Stone, the social networking tool now reaches over 800 million search queries per day. That equals over 24 billion per year, which is more than Bing (4.1 billion) and Yahoo (9.4 billion) combined.

Google still leads the pack with an estimated 88 billion queries per month, but Twitter is quickly catching up. In a little over a year's time, Twitter has reported a 33% increase in searches. This beat the previous record of "fastest growing search engine" with Bing reporting a 22% increase last year.

But calling a Twitter a "social network" is wrong according to Stone, "We're much more like an information network or a source of news." With this new report of their search query success Twitter may just be gaining the ground they need to run with the big dogs.
