The study took into account both demographics and psychographics of social media participants as well as non-users, including how much time was spent logged into social media networks and general feelings about brands participating in social media.

The survey found that 52% of social media users had friended/followed at least one brand, which is exciting news for online marketers looking for new channels for website promotion and target audience interaction.

Other highlights from the survey include:

• Facebook users tend to be extremely loyal to the site, with 75% of respondents claiming Facebook was their favorite social media network and 59% stating that they plan on increasing their logged in Facebook time over the next 6 months.

• Twitter fans are more likely to shop online and to use the service to promote their own websites, brands, etc.
• Myspace users are typically younger and are more likely to be students and/or single.
• Linkedin members own the most electronic gadgets and are also more likely to enjoy soap operas and online gambling.
