What Twitter Can Do On a Business Level

November 9, 2010 - It would seem that Twitter belongs more in the toolbox of the entertainment gossip industry rather than a law firm. However, more lawyers are turning to the micro-blogging Internet phenomenon for networking, marketing and more.

twitter
From phone or PC, Twitter is the fastest way to let the world know what's up.

As with all Internet communications, the first rule of thumb is to monitor what you say on your Twitter account. While you can manage your profile to block open access, and you can restrict certain tweets to certain groups, you still need to be aware that anything said through the World Wide Web always has the danger of coming back to haunt you.

One of the most amazing features that Twitter has given rise to is the ability to follow live, on-site reports of conferences and events you're unable to attend. Many of the big annual meetings and conferences in multiple industries have developed official Twitter feeds that both attendees and absentee members alike can follow to see live updates on what's going on.

It's amazing when you're on the East coast, unable to attend a big legal conference in California, and can follow everything that goes on as it's happening on the convention floor. Of course, you're relying on the fast fingers and 140 characters of someone at the conference, but this new wave of communication has given rise to professional twitterers that make the task look like child's play.

The event twittering can be helpful within your law firm itself. If you have a status meeting that not all your staff can attend, you can create an internal Twitter stream that lets you task an intern or paralegal with updating. That way you have a record of the meeting, and can keep your out-of-office staff informed of what's going on.

Another great reason lawyers are turning to Twitter is the ability to follow professional associations on the service. Many businesses and organizations have a Twitter account that they use to announce important information and link followers to press releases, news articles and more helpful content. It's becoming more and more common to see a "follow us on Twitter" button on many websites.

Your law firm can benefit from this practice too by creating an office Twitter account to announce new case results, office news, and more. One of the most popular uses for legal Twitter accounts is the distribution and promotion of your custom legal content on your website and blogs. Linking to your website from your Twitter account is a great method of link promotion that helps boost your web traffic and increase search engine rankings.

Because Twitter use for lawyers is still in its infancy and there is a fine line to walk between personal and professional conduct within your profile, it's important to make sure you're comfortable with the service before diving in head first. At We Do Web Content we help our clients understand services like Twitter and the impact they have on their Internet marketing.
