Your clients are going mobile - are you?


July 19, 2010 - With the recent boom in smartphone and netbook technology, as well as free Wi-Fi hotspots popping up everywhere from libraries to your neighborhood Starbucks, it's no wonder that 59% of U.S. adults are using wireless devices regularly to get their Internet fix.

A recent study done by the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project surveyed nearly 2,300 people about their daily habits regarding the Internet and how they access it. The study showed the same positive growth trend for mobile use of the Internet on devices like laptops and cell phones.

Text messaging is still holding strong even in the light of mobile instant messaging app use also on the rise. Two anomalies do exist in the survey data regarding e-mail use and social networking on mobile devices. Only 34% reported using their device to check e-mail, while Facebook and Twitter use on-the-go was reported at only 23% and 10% respectively.

Most likely, these low numbers for popular Internet activities like e-mail and social networking are due to the fact that smartphones are still a bit cumbersome to work with. Most users would rather type out a lengthy e-mail on a full-size keyboard rather than peck away at their phone for 20 min, and flipping through Facebook pics or scrolling through tweets best left for a bigger screen.

So what does mobile web use mean to your business?
If you're really eager to jump on the mobile web bandwagon, you'll need to talk to your web designer to see about optimizing your website for mobile devices. This can be a long and costly process, so you may want to do a little client research and see how many of your current clients really use the mobile web to interact with companies like yours.

A good number of existing websites already work well enough on mobile Internet browsers without tweaking, test yours out to see. If you think it's fine as-is, you really just need to focus on the content your clients will be reading. Developing content to be read on a mobile device is really a matter of breaking it up into easily scrollable, smaller chunks.
