Did you know that ballroom dancing is not only good for your body, but it is good for your mind as well? According to many experts, ballroom dance can help improve flexibility, build muscles and burn fat while also helping to sharpen your mind.
Studies Find Mental Benefits to Ballroom Dancing
According to a study conducted by Joe Verghese, MD and his colleagues, people who frequently engage in dancing were less likely to develop dementia than those who never danced.
In order to conduct the study, which appeared in The New England Journal of Medicine, Dr. Verghese and his colleagues studied 469 people. All of the participants were 75-years-old or older and none of them showed signs of dementia prior to the start of the study.
Each of the participants was asked to complete a survey regarding their favorite physical and mental activities, including dancing as well other activities, such as crossword puzzles.
Five years after completing the survey, the researchers studied the participants once again. They found that those who danced frequently were at a lower risk of developing the dementia. Interestingly, other physical activities included on the survey did not appear to lower dementia risks. In addition, most of those who reported being frequent dancers engaged specifically in ballroom dancing.
The Brain-Dance Connection
Although no one can know for certain, Dr. Verghese did propose several theories as to why ballroom dancing wards off dementia, which include:
In all likelihood, ballroom dancing helps to keep the brain sharp through a combination of all the above factors.
While no doctor is quite ready to prescribe ballroom dance lessons as a preventative measure for reducing the risk of dementia, it is certainly something to keep in mind if you are considering learning how to dance.
After all, not only is ballroom dancing fun, it is also a great way to keep physically and mentally in shape while socializing with others.
