The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery claims that Botox is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the United States, representing nearly 25% of all cosmetic surgeries.
But is Botox safe? Even the manufacturer of Botox and Botox Cosmetic acknowledges that Botox injections do carry side effects, and improper dosing or administration can cause serious health problems. However, if you receive Botox treatment from an experienced doctor, your risk of side effects or complications is greatly diminished.
Serious Botox Side Effects
Botox is a toxin, so the dosing and administration must be handled very carefully. Botox is produced from Clostridium botulinum bacteria - the same bacteria that causes botulism food poisoning, according to the National Institutes of Health.
Public Citizen, a consumer advocacy group, claims that Botox has been associated with 658 cases of adverse reactions. Of those cases, 180 have included serious side effects, such as muscle paralysis, difficulty swallowing and aspiration pneumonia.
Less serious Botox side effects have also been noted, including:
Public Citizen also notes that Botox injections have been linked with 16 deaths, but they think the true number may be higher since many cases of Botox side effects go unreported.
Complications Increase with Off-Label Use
Some of the more serious Botox complications occur when Botox is used "off label."
The FDA has approved Botox injections for several purposes, including reducing wrinkles, but if Botox is used for another purpose, it's considered off-label use. Off-label use is not illegal or unethical, since many physicians do this to treat rare illnesses.
Off-label use of botox can cause problems though. USA Today notes that many doctors have used Botox injections to treat children with cerebral palsy who have "limb spasticity." When used in this way, Botox is more likely to lead to serious side effects like difficultly breathing or trouble swallowing.
