Common Toxins in Toys Cause Product Liability Concerns

Did you know that lead was detected in 20% of toys according to Consumer Product Safety Commission in the United States? Out of 1,500 toys tested for common toxins by the Ecology Center, 33% had traces of cadmium, lead, or mercury in them.

What are Common Toxins Found in Toys, and How Are They Harmful?

Bromine

Bromine has been found in action figure toys, dolls, figurines, and toy cars. Bromine has been linked to poor brain development, birth defects, and reproductive problems.

Lead

Toy paint, plastic, and metals (as found in jewelry) can contain lead. Since lead has no smell and cannot be detected by the naked eye, it is particularly dangerous. Children usually begin ingesting lead through paint chips and powder by playing with their toys and then putting their hands in their mouths.

• In the previously-mentioned CDC study of 1,500 toys (which include recently popular brands such as Hannah Montana), 3.5% of toys presented a level of lead higher than 600 parts-per-million.
• 62% of products (954 items) contained low levels of chemical concern.
• 21% of the tested products presented no worrisome findings.
• 21% of toys from China had certain lead levels, while 16% of toys from "other countries" had lead in them.
• Out of the 17 toys tested made in the United States, 33% contained lead.

Arsenic

Arsenic is a heavy metal which cannot exceed 25 parts-per-million in a toy sold in the U.S. It has been known to cause cancer, as well as blood disorders, skin irritation, and brain development problems.

Mercury

Mercury can be found in some vinyl products made for children, such as bath toys and school materials. As we have seen in studies discussing mercury-laden fish, high levels of mercury in the body can damage the nervous system and kidneys.

Cadmium

Cadmium harms the body by affecting the kidneys and liver, and can lead to cancer or death. It is known for its presence in painted toys, but is also found in vinyl children's accessories and plastic toys.
