Crib Injuries and Deaths More Prevalent Than Realized

When you purchase items to outfit a nursery or redecorate a children's room, it's easy to get wrapped up in colors and novelty items. However, arming yourself with current statistics and safety tips will help you protect your child and keep you focused on their comfort and safety.

Statistics Regarding Crib Deaths and Child Injuries

  • Between 2000 and 2004, 97 children under five died from crib-related accidents, which included getting stuck between mattresses, getting tangled in window treatments outside of the crib, and suffocating on bedding or accessories.
  • 25% of the children who died were in old or damaged cribs.
  • 11,300 children were hurt in crib-related accidents in 2006 alone. An additional 1,100 injuries were caused by play areas and playpens in 2006.
  • 28 babies died in cradles and bassinets in 2006, and there were also 32 deaths in sleep environments like playpens and play yards.

How to Prevent Crib-Related Injuries

Following the tips below on crib safety will help keep your children safe from possible harm:

  • Do not purchase antique cribs. They might work well with your decor, but the slats on the crib will most likely be spaced differently than newer cribs. The space needs to measure in at 2 3/8 inches.
  • Do not use cribs with cutout designs, because they can entrap children.
  • Confirm that the corner posts on the crib stand at least 16 inches above crib panels. This prevents pajama snagging.
  • Remove ribbons from bassinets.
  • Avoid blankets, toys, and pillows in the crib, and instead use a snuggly baby jumpsuit to keep your child warm.
  • Make sure the baby's mattress fits in the crib snugly. If you can fit two fingers' width between the frame and the mattress, it is too small.

Real-Life Product Liability

If you are reading this because you suspect you need to hire a product liability attorney, here's one case to review.

Royale Arceneaux and the Simplicity Crib Recall

Royale Arceneaux, a 7-month-old infant, died in 2007 from a crib-related accident. The Simplicity and Graco crib in which she died was recalled by the Consumer Products Safety Commission, and the parents filed a lawsuit against Simplicity for providing unclear crib construction information. Royale's parents had accidentally assembled the crib with one upside-down panel, leaving a space that later strangled Royale. The parents involved in the lawsuit also asserted that the recall should have occurred more promptly.
