Exploring the Many Uses of Botox Injections

Although Botox, which is scientifically know as botulinum toxin, is best known for its effectiveness as a wrinkle treatment, there are actually many other potential uses for drug. In fact, health care professionals have been able to successfully use Botox injections to treat a number of conditions that are not cosmetic in nature.

Additional Uses for Botox Injections

While Botox is mostly known for its ability to temporarily reduce the appearance of wrinkles on the face, Botox cosmetic injections are not approved for use on people over the age of 65. Research has shown that the wrinkle treatment is ineffective when used on individuals within this age bracket.

Botox is ok for use on the elderly and children to treat the following conditions:

  • Blepharospasm: an eyelid twitch caused by spasms or contractions of the eye (may be used with children as young as 12)
  • Cervical dystonia: spasms or contractions affecting the head and neck, which may result in an abnormal head position, neck pain and unusual head and neck movements (may be used with children as young as 16)
  • Hyperhydrosis: severe sweating, which may be caused by certain medical conditions and medications (may be used with children as young as 16)
  • Strabismus: misalignment of the eyes caused by spasms or contractions of the eye (may be used with children as young as 12)

In addition to these medically recognized uses for Botox injections, there are several off-label uses for Botox as well.

Off-Label Uses for Botox

Although Botox is not techically considered to be a treatment option for some conditions, doctors may sometimes use it as a treatment.

Here are some examples:

  • Achalasia, which is a condition that is characterized by difficulty with swallowing
  • Drooling
  • Muscle spasms that affect children with cerebral palsy
  • Neurogenic bladder, which is a bladder disorder caused by problems with the nerves
  • Migraine headaches

With all of these conditions, Botox can be a successful form of treatment because it helps the muscles relax by decreasing the nerve signals that are sent to them.
