Exploring the Need for Healthcare Reform for Women

While the call for health care reform has been made in an effort to reduce health care cost and improve coverage for all Americans, women may benefit most from Obama's health care plan. The reality is that women are at a higher risk of accruing overwhelming healthcare expenditures. With greater access to affordable health insurance coverage through the Obama health plan, however, women may be able to reduce their health care cost while also successfully preventing chronic conditions that can place a drain on the U.S. healthcare system.

Women and the US Healthcare System

According to the U.S government, women are more prone to higher health care costs than men. Unfortunately for women, the current U.S. healthcare system does little to help with this situation, as many health insurance companies do not provide women with access to preventative care that addresses their unique reproductive health issues.

In addition to having difficulty accessing preventative reproductive healthcare, women are also more likely to report themselves as being in poor health then men. They are also more likely than men to suffer from headaches, neck pain, back pain and joint pain. All of these conditions require obtaining frequent follow-up care and treatment.

Roadblocks Women Face in Obtaining Proper Healthcare

The current healthcare system also places many roadblocks in front of women who seeking healthcare coverage.

Some roadblocks for women seeking preventative care include:

• Women are less likely to have full-time employment than men, with 73% of men working full-time compared to 52% of women, which makes them less likely to receive employer-based health insurance coverage
• 41% of women are covered by insurance through their spouse, which leaves them without coverage once their spouse leaves the workforce
• Women are still facing lower wages than their male counterparts, making it more difficult for them to afford to pay for rising health insurance costs

As a result, approximately 21 million women and girls had no health insurance coverage in 2007. Through the Obama health care plan, however, a greater number of women will be able to access an affordable health care plan whether they are married or single and whether they work part-time, full-time or not at all.
