Although acne is a very common skin ailment suffered by people of all ages, there exists a plethora of myths and misconceptions about the skin condition. Some of the myths about acne might lead a sufferer to take actions that actually worsen the condition or lead to acne scars.
Acne can be very frustrating, painful and embarrassing. However, there are a number of acne treatment options available, including helpful home acne treatments that can provide some relief from symptoms like whiteheads, blackheads and inflammation.
Acne is More Than a Skin Condition
Though often mistakenly dismissed as a simple skin condition, acne can significantly impact the sufferer's life, causing serious embarrassment and poor self-esteem. Moderate to severe acne can hinder a person's social and professional life, and can develop in or persist well into adulthood. In some cases, the cysts, blemishes and lesions associated with serious acne can cause permanent scars.
Acne Is Not a Sign of a Dirty Face
Because acne is caused, in part, by the bacteria that exist on the skin, it is a common misconception to equate the presence of acne with poor hygiene. In actuality acne-causing bacteria is simply trapped in a follicle where it cannot easily be washed away. While a "clean face" can be helpful, it is important that an acne sufferer refrain from scrubbing the face with harsh cleansers and hot water, as this will irritate the skin and actually inflammation and oil production.
Tanning Doesn't Cure Acne
As with good makeup, a suntan can help to cover the signs of acne. But the "mask" is only temporary. Sunlight, both natural and artificial, can dry the skin, causing irritation that eventually leads to more breakouts. If that wasn't bad enough, exposure to the sun actually damages the skin and can eventually lead to wrinkles and skin cancer.
Acne is Not Just For Teens
Although teenagers are especially prone to acne because of their natural hormone fluctuations during puberty, acne is the most common skin ailment for all ages. It is possible that a person will not develop acne until adulthood, or that his or her acne will persist and worsen as they age.
