For a variety of reasons, you may be considering breast augmentation; however, your main concern is probably the thought of: Is breast implant surgery is for me? First off, what is breast augmentation?
Breast Augmentation
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons says, "Also known as augmentation mammaplasty, breast augmentation involves using implants to fulfill your desire for fuller breasts or to restore breast volume lost after weight reduction or pregnancy."
What are Implants?
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) shares, "Breast implants are medical devices that are implanted either under breast tissue or under the chest muscle for breast augmentation or reconstruction. There are two major types: saline-filled and silicone gel-filled. Saline-filled breast implants are silicone shells that are either pre-filled or filled with saline during surgery, and some of these allow for adjustments of the filler volume after surgery. Silicone gel-filled breast implants are silicone shells pre-filled with silicone gel. Breast implants vary in profile, size, and shell surface (smooth or textured)."
Breast Augmentation Surgery Safety
Of course a main concern when you are considering breast enlargement or any kind of plastic surgery is probably, is it safe? There really is no clear answer because as with any surgery there are always risks associated with having surgery. Some of those risks are greater with certain kinds of surgical procedures and less with others. Your surgeon should always explain all the risks associated with the cosmetic surgery prior to the surgery day.
Perhaps though you have heard that breast implants cause diseases or illnesses for some people who have had them? The American Society of Plastic Surgeons says on their website, "Breast implants do not impair breast health. Careful review of scientific research conducted by independent groups such as the Institute of Medicine has found no proven link between breast implants and autoimmune or other systemic diseases."
