Miley Cyrus: Bad Influence or Teen Idol?

Miley Cyrus is merely a teenager, yet she has managed to appear in both Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World and Forbes magazine's Celebrity 100 list.

Although being the daughter of country music singer Billy Ray Cyrus didn't hurt, Miley Cyrus's big break came with the release of the Disney series Hannah Montana in 2006.  She has since starred in 3 movies and released 5 albums. Not surprisingly, this stardom does not come without controversy.

Vanity Fair Photo Controversy

In spring of 2008, Vanity Fair magazine released photos of Cyrus posing in just a bed sheet, her bare back exposed. Many parents were outraged over the suggestive photos, stating that a 15-year-old with such wide influence over young children should be more modest. Disney executives were not happy about the racy photo shoot either.

More than 3 million people watch Hannah Montana episodes on Disney, with most ranging from ages 6 to 14, according to The New York Times. Thus, the image portrayed in the revealing photo shoot does not seem in line with her young fan base.  

On April 27, 2008, two days after the public was informed about the photos, Cyrus made a public apology to fans. According to People, representatives from the Disney Channel suggested that photographer Annie Leibovitz purposely deceived the then 15-year-old about the nature of the photos simply to sell magazines.

Miley Cyrus Provocative Pole Dance at Teen Awards Show

Another controversy swirled during the Teen Choice Awards in early August 2009. During the show, Miley Cyrus danced around a metal pole attached to an ice cream cart as she sang onstage, bringing up images of strippers to many of those watching.

Like the Vanity Fair photo set, Cyrus's Teen Choice Awards dance drew criticism from those who considered it too suggestive for a wholesome teenager and role model to be doing onstage. When asked about the pole dancing incident, her father commented that she simply loves to entertain.

According to MTV, Disney is keeping silent about the performance. Cyrus won 6 awards that night at the Teen Choice Awards, 2 of which were for the Hannah Montana movie. As for her reputation, it seems like the bad press hasn't had a negative effect so far.
