If you are like most Americans, you have been paying close attention to the energetic health care reform debate that is currently taking place in Washington, DC. Although the two political parties are split on how they want to go about reforming U.S. health care, everyone agrees on one thing: our health care system needs to place more emphasis on preventing diseases rather than focusing on treating them after they develop.
Lack of Prevention Causes Increased Health Care Cost
According to Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, many Americans are unable to find affordable health insurance. As a result, they do not receive the preventative care they need and they become ill, which ultimately leads to a rise in the health care costs for the entire country.
As part of Obama's health care plan, more Americans will gain access to affordable health insurance. In turn, supporters of the health care plan believe more people will get the preventative care they need to help bring down the nation's health care costs.
Health Care Statistics Paint a Frightening Picture of the Future
Sebelius says more money is spent on U.S. health care than on health care in any other part of the world. Yet, Americans don't live longer than people in other countries.
Furthermore, many scientists believe that the current generation of American children may not enjoy the same life expectancy as their parents. In fact, they believe many of today's children will develop chronic diseases that could have been prevented.
In addition to leading to a lower life expectancy for the next generation, Sebelius reports that 85% of health care monies are currently spent toward treating chronic conditions. Many of these conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes and obesity, are preventable.
With the help of a health care reform plan that places an emphasis on prevention, supporters of the Obama health plan hope to see a significant drop in the amount of money that is spent on preventable diseases.
