With the popularity of vampire books such as the Twilight series, by Stephenie Meyer and The Vampire Diaries, by L.J. Smith, movies such as Twilight, Interview with the Vampire, Bram Stoker's Dracula and others; it's no wonder that vampire stories have spilled over into the television realm as well.
Popular Early Vampire TV Shows
"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" was an immensely popular television series that aired from March 10, 1997 until May 20, 2003. The show starred Sarah Michelle Gellar and aired on the smaller network WB television.
Reviews for the show were positive; ranking #41 on the list of TV Guide's 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time as well as #2 on Empire's 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time. Buffy was also voted #3 in TV Guide's Top 25 Cult TV Shows of All Time and included in TIME Magazine's 100 Best TV Shows of All Time.
Buffy produced a spin-off show in "Angel" which aired its first episode on October 5, 1999. The show detailed the trials and tribulations of Angel, a vampire whose human soul was restored to him by gypsies as a punishment for the murder of one of their own. Angel was played by David Boreanaz, who played the Angel character on Buffy as well.
Current Vampire TV Shows
"Vampire Diaries" premieres on the WB on September 10, 2009 and is based on the book from L.J. Smith. The main characters are Elena Gilbert, portrayed by Nina Dobrev, Stefan Salvatore, played by Paul Wesley, and Damon Salvatore, portrayed by Ian Somerhalder.
The series is set in the small town of Mystic Falls, Virginia. The two vampire brothers, one good, one evil, are at war for the affection and attention of Elena and both want her soul.
"True Blood" is HBO's answer to the vampire craze; it is based on The Southern Vampire Mysteries series of novels by Charlaine Harris. According to TV.com, "The second season premiere of HBO's "True Blood" reeled in 3.7 million viewers on Sunday, the highest number for HBO since 11 million tuned in to watch the series finale of "The Sopranos." Though the difference in the numbers is staggering, it appears that "True Blood" is starting to fill some pretty big shoes."
