At some point in our lives, we each will suffer from the flu. Subsequently, we're all familiar with the horrible symptoms that accompany the influenza virus. Aches, pains, fever and feelings of nausea are among the indicators that one has contracted the flu. Medical advances, including vaccines and drugs like Tamiflu, have helped us to combat this illness.
However, in April of 2009, scientists identified a new strain of flu - known as the H1N1 strain or swine flu. By now most everyone has heard about swine flu, but not everyone has a firm understanding of exactly what it is and how to avoid contracting it.
What is Swine Flu?
Most commonly referred to as the swine flu, the H1N1 strain of influenza quickly became a flu pandemic after its identification in April 2009. It was the first worldwide pandemic designated by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 41 years.
It was first identified in Mexico, and shortly thereafter, cases began showing up in the United States and throughout the world. Scientists believe that it is a combination of four previously known strains of influenza, one of which was normally found in humans, another in birds (avian) and two in pigs (swine).
The swine flu spreads in much the same way as any other strain of flu:
Contrary to what the name would suggest, swine flu is not contracted by eating pork products.
Most cases are mild and last only for three to seven days. The deaths that have occurred with swine flu are usually attributed to the victim's previous health conditions, such as asthma, diabetes or a weakened immune system.
What are the symptoms of swine flu?
Swine flu symptoms are similar to those suffered during the typical seasonal flu.
Among the chief swine flu symptoms are:
In some cases, diarrhea and vomiting were also reported. More severe symptoms can require emergency medical attention.
In children, H1N1 symptoms include:
In adults, the more severe symptoms include shortness of breath, pain in the chest or abdomen and sudden dizziness or confusion.
