Michael Jackson died suddenly on June 25, 2009. The news of Michael Jackson's death immediately flooded the airwaves and dominated media coverage for days to come. Fans of the King of Pop, who was on the verge of launching his comeback tour, were overcome with grief and began gathering at Neverland Ranch.
Due to the outpouring of public grief from Michael Jackson's fans, the Jackson family wanted to hold a public memorial. The original idea was to hold the Michael Jackson memorial at Neverland, but logistics made it too difficult to hold the memorial at the rural ranch. As a result, the family decided to hold Michael Jackson's memorial at the Staples Center in Los Angeles
Planning for the Michael Jackson Memorial
Due to limited space and overwhelming demand, tickets were distributed via an online raffle. According to MTV.com, nearly 1.6 million people registered online hoping to get a pair of tickets to the Michael Jackson memorial. In the end, 17,500 tickets were distributed to the public memorial service.
The Los Angeles Police Department, which was tasked with providing security and crowd control for the memorial, was initially concerned that thousands of fans without tickets would converge on the Staples Center. According to Pollstar.com, Earl Paysinger, chief of the LAPD, estimated that as many as 700,000 people could show up at the Michael Jackson memorial.
Michael Jackson Memorial Rumor
The Michael Jackson memorial attracted a great deal of speculation and rumors in the days leading up the event. Fans and media commentators wondered who would perform and how the memorial would be set up to remember Michael Jackson and his decades-long career. The Jackson family released few details prior to the memorial service, which only served to increase the speculation.
The media and the public also speculated over who would attend. Would Michael Jackson's former wives, Debbie Rowe or Lisa Marie Presley attend the memorial? Would Jackson's children be unveiled in public for one of the first times? Elizabeth Taylor, one of Michael Jackson's closest friends, raised quite a few eyebrows when she announced that she would not be attending the Michael Jackson memorial, as FoxNews.com reported. Taylor said, "I cannot be part of the public whoopla."
