It seems like new smartphones are being introduced into the marketplace every day.
Although there is no complete agreement on the definition of a smartphone, Wikipedia says, "A smartphone is a mobile phone offering advanced capabilities, often with PC-like functionality (PC-mobile handset convergence)."
While About.com says its definition of a smartphone would include a QWERTY keyboard, many would disagree with that as an absolute requirement. That's especially true for millions of teenagers who can text message with a standard phone keyboard faster than their parents are able to with a full-size QWERTY keyboard. Increasingly though, the standard for a smartphone includes access to the Internet.
Most people expect these features in a smartphone:
Although there are many brands of smartphones, two stand out as the most popular: the Research In Motion (RIM) Blackberry and the Apple iPhone.
Blackberry took the business world by storm with its push email. This means the email comes to your phone automatically when sent. You do not need to log-in to get it. Blackberry even allows push email for multiple accounts so whenever a message is sent to your home, office or other account, it is also sent to your phone automatically.
One of the "smart" features of a smartphone is that it will allow you decide how email is handled. You can have the phone vibrate, ring, flash or ignore each email per individualized settings. Then, you can choose to save them, delete them from the phone or delete them entirely from the server, which can be a huge timesaver.
You can delete all the messages you never want to see again. That way when you log in with your computer later, they are already gone. So if you travel with your smartphone and check your email, you may never again come back to your home or office to dozens of unread emails.
