The Basics on Botox

Botox is a widely popular non-surgical treatment in the United States, used for a variety of medical and cosmetic purposes.

In fact, Botox is the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure in the U.S., with 2.4 million procedures performed each year, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
Overall, there were 10.2 million surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures performed in 2008, so Botox injections make up nearly 25% of all cosmetic treatments.

What is Botox?

Botox is essentially a toxin that can be beneficial in very small doses.
Botox originates from Clostridium botulinum bacteria, which is the same bacteria that causes a dangerous food poisoning called botulism. Under medical supervision, however, this bacterium can be used to weaken or paralyze certain nerves or muscles, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Botox is manufactured by the drug company Allergan, and it is marketed under two brand names including Botox Cosmetic and Botox.

What is Botox used for?

While Botox has a number of medical uses, it is primarily used for cosmetic purposes to temporarily reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Botox Cosmetic is approved by the FDA for treatment of "moderate to severe frown lines between the brows." Botox Cosmetic is intended for adults between the ages of 18 and 65.

According to the National Institutes of Health, Botox can also be used to:

  • Reduce excessive underarm or palm sweating
  • Relieve the symptoms of cervical dystonia, a disorder that causes involuntary muscle contractions in the neck and shoulders
  • Eliminate uncontrollable blinking
  • Reduce the pain of migraines
  • Provide temporary relief for painful muscles

However, the effects of Botox injections are only temporary. The Mayo Clinic notes that results from Botox injections typically last only about three months. Whether you receive Botox for wrinkles, excessive sweating or migraines, keep in mind that the results are temporary unless you receive new injections every few months.

Cost of Botox injections

Botox treatments aren't cheap, especially if you want lasting results.
While the specific price of Botox injections varies based on your location and your doctor, DocShop.com estimates that the average cost for one botox injection is $375. However, some treatments require multiple injections, so the price may be more depending on your treatment plan.
