The Disparities in the US Health Care System

Despite the fact that the United States spends more money on health care than any other country in the world, research continues to demonstrate that a number of disparities exist within the US health care system.

In 2007, our country spent a whopping $2.2 trillion in health care. Yet, minorities and low-income Americans are experiencing reduced access to health care and a disproportionately higher rate of disease. This disparity within the current US health care system is just one of many reasons why so many are pushing to reform health care as quickly as possible.

Taking Steps to Improve Health Care for Everyone

Although Obama's health care plan has received a great deal of criticism because of its high price tag and the uncertainty that it will actually be able to reduce the overwhelming health care cost so many Americans are facing, the basic goals of the Obama health care plan are ones that everyone can agree to. This is because the Obama health plan aims to:

• Make health care more affordable to all Americans
• Protect the patient's right to choose his or her hospitals, doctors and health insurance plans
• Place more emphasis on preventative medicine and wellness rather than focusing primarily upon treatment
• Provide quality health care to all Americans

Diseases and Minority Groups

Although a lack of preventative care is a concern for all Americans, research shows that it is an even greater problem for minorities. Consider these shocking facts:

• 48% of African-Americans suffer from chronic disease, compared to 39% of the general population.
• 7 out of 10 African-Americans between the ages of 18 and 64 are overweight or obese, making them 15% more likely to be obese than Caucasians.
• African-Americans are more likely to die from cancer than any other racial group.
• 18% of American Indians, 15% of African-Americans an 14% of Hispanics suffer from diabetes, while the same is true for only 8% of Caucasians.
• Hispanics experience new HIV infections at 2 and 1/2 times the rate of Caucasians, while African-Americans experience new infections at seven times the rate.

These disparities are just a few of the reasons why the Obama health care plan is attempting to provide universal health care by providing affordable health insurance to all Americans.
