The Rise of Miley Cyrus and Hannah Montana

There are few celebrities who manage to conquer everything from platinum album sales and box office blockbusters to television and merchandising empires. Miley Cyrus is one of them, and her young age makes it all the more remarkable that she is famous for singing, acting, and even writing and designing.

The Success of Hannah Montana

Miley Cyrus's breakout role was in the Disney sensation Hannah Montana, a television show about a normal teenage girl named Miley Stewart who just happens to double at night as a pop singer known as Hannah Montana. To hide her true identity from classmates, Miley Stewart wears a blonde wig when she is singing or acting as Hannah Montana.

The show premiered in March 2006, and Disney executives have planned the fourth and final season to air in 2010. According to MTV, a soundtrack for the show was released in the fall of 2006 and Cyrus sang eight Hannah Montana songs herself. One of them was a duet with her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, of Achy Breaky Heart fame.

According to the UK's Times Online, one reason many teens and preteens love the show is that they like the idea of a secret life, or famous alter ago. Being both a normal girl and a tremendously popular singer is appealing to girls across the world, causing the show to average about four million viewers per episode, even in its early days.

Accolades for the Hannah Montana Movie, Show, and Songs

Hannah Montana has won trophies from the Casting Society of America, Young Artist Awards, Kids' Choice Awards, and Teen Choice Awards, according to IMDB. Cyrus herself has won such awards for her acting, as well as the Hannah Montana songs I Got Nerve and Best of Both Worlds at the Radio Disney Music Awards. 

Additionally, Hannah Montana: The Movie won an MTV Movie Award for Breakthrough Performance Female, and a Teen Choice Award for "Best Hissy Fit." Clearly, the Hannah Montana empire does not go unnoticed by fans.
