Tips for Preventing Sexual Harassment

Are you worried about the possibility of becoming the victim of sexual harassment?

While you cannot control the actions of other people, you will be happy to know that there are steps you can take to help prevent workplace harassment from happening to you. In order to prevent sexual harassment however, you need to know what to do if someone makes sexual advancements upon you or makes sexual comments to you.

Reacting to Sexual Harassment

Here are some steps you should take if you are sexually harassed at work:                          

• Express your disapproval - tell the person that their behavior is offensive to you. If the behavior continues, write a letter to the harasser asking them to stop and keep a copy for your records.
• Document what happened - write down what happened and what was said, making sure to include dates, times, places and anyone who might have witnessed the incident.
• Make a report - report the incident in writing to your supervisor or the human resources department, keeping a copy for your records. This way, you are creating a paper trail to support your claim.
• Request to see your personnel file - you have the right to see your personnel file at any time, so request to see it and make sure your report has been documented and that negative actions have not been illegally taken against you for reporting the sexual harassment.
• Follow workplace guidelines - your employer may have specific procedures in place for workplace harassment cases. Be sure to follow this procedure and to document each step along the way. Involve your union if necessary.
• File a complaint with a government agency - if the problem still is not resolved, file a sexual harassment with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, or EEOC, as well as with your state's fair employment agency.
• Hire an employment attorney - at this point, it might be time for you to hire a lawyer who specializes in sexual harassment and employment law. 

By taking these steps, you should be able to put an end to the harassment before it escalates to the point where hiring an employment attorney is necessary.
