Today, vampires can be found everywhere from children's books to low-budget horror films and even giant Hollywood blockbusters. Historically though, vampires were common folk legends that existed in a wide variety of cultures, so it would only make sense that those legends grew into the world of literature. Vampires are a major part of Victorian-era gothic fiction, illustrated by the publication of Polidori's The Vampyre (1819).
Vampire History
Vampire fiction is steeped in the vampire obsession stemming from the 1720s and 1730s. The piqued interest came from the official exhumations under the Habsburg Monarchy in Serbia of suspected vampires Peter Plogojowitz and Arnold Paole.

According to some, I Am Legend by author Richard Matheson in (1954) was influential in contributing to the popularity of vampires in the 20th century and inspired three movies: The Last Man on Earth, starring Vincent Price in 1964; The Omega Man, starring Charlton Heston in 1971; and I am Legend, starring Will Smith in 2007.
Fashionable author Anne Rice popularized vampires in the mid-1970's with Interview with the Vampire. She went on to write several other novels in The Vampire Chronicles until the last novel, Blood Canticle in 2003. Her first novel, Interview with the Vampire became a highly successful movie.
Modern Vampire Literature
There are some examples of contemporary vampire fiction, including Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series and The Vampire Diaries by L.J. Smith. Ms. Meyer's novels, Twilight and New Moon, have been made into vampire movies and The Vampire Diaries has been made into a television show.
