Vampires have been a literary fixture since 1897 when the novel Dracula was written by Bram Stoker. It is about a fictional Transylvanian vampire named Count Dracula, but is partly based on the real Transylvanian crown prince Vlad the Impaler.
There have been thousands of movies, books, and even television shows written about the blood thirsty vampires. One of the first writers to really bring vampires back into the forefront in the last part of the 20th century is Anne Rice.
Anne began her vampire stories with Interview with the Vampire, published in 1976. She went on to write nine more books in the Vampire Chronicles Series.
The Anne Rice Vampire Chronicles:
Anne Rice's books influenced generations of readers. Her website biography states: "Her books are rich tapestries of history, belief, philosophy, religion, and compelling characters that examine and extend our physical world beyond the limits we perceive."
Interview with the Vampire inspired a film, released in 1994, which starred Brad Pitt, Kirsten Dunst, Antonio Banderas, Christian Slater and Tom Cruise.
Interview was a major success and created a resurgence of interest in the book, quickly moving it to the best seller list. Originally, Anne Rice objected to Tom Cruise being cast as Lestat; however, after seeing his performance, she recanted her objections.
With the advent of the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer, True Blood, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as well as the Vampire Diaries, even more people are getting fascinated with vampires and their stories. However, not everyone shares this interest.
A July 2009 review on MSNBC states, "Somebody needs to drive a stake in this trend."
Nevertheless, with all the regular shows and movies, and the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie, two Twilight sequels, a new TV series in The Vampire Diaries, and a new film, Priest, vampire lovers will have a lot of material to watch, read, and enjoy.
