What Is a Crib Tent, and Can It Hurt My Baby?

Crib tent safety is a serious concern for many parents and caregivers, and if you are looking for crib tent details for the first time, you will probably find information referring to product liability. By learning about the dangers of crib tents and common crib safety tips, you'll know how to protect a baby or small child.

Definition: Crib Tent

A crib tent is a mesh covering, usually domed, which attaches over the top of a crib.

What Are Some Crib Safety Statistics?

Crib tents, while usually safe when installed, have been reported in select cases to cause strangulation or injury when a child tears a hole in the mesh siding, becomes tangled by the crib tent itself, or is pinned by an inverted crib dome.

  • 97 children and babies died between 2000 and 2004 in crib-related accidents.
  • 50% of these children died by suffocating on bedding or other soft crib accessories.
  • 13% died from hazards located around the crib, such as blinds, cords, and curtain ties.
  • 25% of the children who died in between 2000 and 2004 in a crib-related accident were hurt by an old crib with damaged or missing pieces.
  • 2006 saw 11,300 injuries to children caused by cribs or crib mattresses.
  • 32 deaths and 1,100 injuries were caused by playpens and play yards in 2006.

What Are Some Crib Safety Tips?

These numbers may be surprising, especially upon initial examination, but there is a special note to keep in mind: many injuries and deaths caused by cribs, crib accessories, crib tents, and bedding are preventable. Knowing general safety precautions as well as lesser-known crib dangers is the best method for protecting a child.

  • Confirm that vertical bars on a crib do not exceed 2 3/8 inches. Older cribs will need to be measured carefully, while all newer cribs will meet this requirement due to current safety laws.
  • Be sure that cribs do not feature cutouts on headboards or on the foot of the bed.
  • Consider purchasing a lower crib, which will prevent fall injuries.
  • Know that crib mattresses must fit snugly into the frame.
  • Cover a mattress with a flat sheet only, avoiding sheepskin and anything fluffy.
