If you've heeded the advice of safety experts who recommend preparing for hurricane season well in advance of summer, you know to arrange for the proper hurricane and flood insurance, stock a pantry with canned goods, assemble a storm survival kit and prepare a hurricane plan.

While it's vital to know what to do before and during a tropical storm, you might be wondering what to do after a hurricane strikes.

Develop a Post-Hurricane Plan

Post-hurricane planning is just as important as pre-hurricane preparation. Even when a storm has left the region and the danger seems to have passed, threats remain in areas that have been struck by a hurricane or tropical storm.

A stunning example of deadly hurricane aftermath is 2005's Hurricane Katrina. The storm itself did not kill nearly as many people as did the massive flooding and post-storm hazards.

Post-Hurricane Dangers

The high winds, storm surges and torrential rains of a hurricane can leave a wake of destruction in a storm's path, knocking out electricity throughout a region and causing massive amounts of property damage.

Lurking among the rubble and floodwaters are a host of dangers:

• Frayed electrical wires - Sparks from a frayed wire can be a fire hazard.
• Downed electrical wires - Low-hanging live wires can cause serious and fatal electrical shock.
• Natural gas leaks - Broken gas pipes carry the double threat of explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning.
• Contaminated floodwaters - Water that is laced with raw sewage and other toxic materials is hazardous to the health, for both short- and long-term concerns.
• Rising water - Storm surges or heavy rains can lead to flash flooding and a more gradual water elevation crisis, which can damage homes and lead to drowning deaths.
• Weakened structures - High winds and water damage can erode roadways and compromise the integrity of certain structures, including bridges and buildings.
• Crime - Hurricanes, tropical storms and electrical outages create a chaotic situation and police and public safety officers will likely respond to numerous calls of distress. Theft and looting have been known to happen after major hurricanes and public safety can be an area of concern.
