Without Treatment, Acne Can Scar More Than Your Face

Acne vulgaris, which means "common acne," is a skin condition that most commonly appears in teenagers. However, adult acne is on the rise.

According to acne.org, about 50% of women and 25% of men get acne during adulthood. Overall, about 80% of people will get acne at some point in their lives.

Though there are plenty of acne treatments available, not everyone can circumvent the physical effects of the condition. The main visible effect is acne scarring, which can occur in both adults and teenagers. Whether they stay for long or are temporary, acne scars are definitely damaging in several ways to those suffering from them.

Get to Know the Myriad Types of Acne Scars

If you suffer from acne, finding out about available treatment is likely a high priority. No one wants scars that last a lifetime, but many will if they don't consider acne treatments. However, before looking to either dermatologists or over the counter treatments, it is helpful to know the kinds of acne scars that exist.

According to acne.com, there are five main scar types.

These descriptions can help determine which kind you have:

• Ice-pick scars are the most common, and are small and deep with jagged edges
• Soft scars have smoother, sloping edges, and are small and soft
• Depressed fibriotic scars often used to be ice-pick scars, and keep their jagged edges while becoming larger
• Follicular macular atrophy are small and white, and are often found on the chest and back
• Atrophic macules are small, either blue or white, and are among the most common types
