Understanding Acne: Symptoms, Types and Treatment (Part B)

Whiteheads and blackheads are some of the most commonly experienced symptoms of acne. Although both are signs of problems with the skin's pores, whiteheads and blackheads have different underlying causes.

Whiteheads and Blackheads

A whitehead appears when the secretions of the sebaceous glands and resulting bacteria are trapped below the surface of the skin. If poked or "popped" (something that is never recommended for any acne blemish), the whitehead will often burst and excrete a white or yellowish fluid.

Blackheads, on the other hand, occur when the skin's pores are open to the air and the contents of the sebaceous glands react with the air, turning a black or brown color. Contrary to popular belief, the blackhead's color is not caused by dirt, but rather, the oils from one's own skin. Because blackheads are more of a "below the surface" phenomenon, they can last for weeks before clearing.

Experiencing Mild to Moderate Acne

Mild to moderate acne can involve the presence of non-inflammatory lesions, like whiteheads and blackheads.

In some cases, the sufferer may also experience:

• Pustules - Similar in nature to a whitehead, but more severe, with a red, inflamed surrounding area and a white or yellow "head."
• Papules - Red bumps on the skin, with no discernable center or head. Often sensitive to the touch, a papule should not be squeezed or poked, in the interest of preventing infection or acne scarring.

Symptoms of Severe Acne

Though chronic acne is unpleasant for anyone, those who experience severe acne are much more likely to develop permanent acne scars and other long-term and life-altering complications. Severe acne consists of inflammation well below the skin's surface and in multiple pores.

Acne can be quite painful and often can result in scarring, particularly when blemishes are poked or prodded.

Sufferers of severe acne also might experience:

• Nodules - Large, painful lesions below the surface of the skin
• Cysts - Similar to nodules, but with liquid (pus)

Treating Acne

Acne is not a sign of poor skin hygiene, but it is a good idea to regularly wash the skin with a gentle, yet effective cleanser and to avoid irritating skincare products.

Listed below are a few points to keep in mind when considering acne treatment:

• Over-the-counter cleansers and acne treatments are often effective in treating mild cases
• Moderate to severe acne, or acne that is chronic, could require a visit to the dermatologist
• Tempting as it may be, never squeeze or pick at acne blemishes as it can promote infection
• Know that you are not alone and that there are effective acne treatments options
