In addition to an over-active sebaceous gland and abundance of sebum, a pore's health (and, therefore, the health of the skin) is impacted by the amount of bacteria present on the skin.

Bacteria and Acne

Although bacterial growth is a primary factor in the presence of acne, the skin ailment is by no means a sign of poor hygiene. Bacteria grows and multiplies below the surface of the skin, specifically in pores plugged with excess oil (sebum) and dead skin cells-which has nothing to do with how much a person washes.

• Hormones: Fluctuations in hormone levels - such as those that occur around puberty or menstruation - have an impact on the skin's oil production.

There is no magical acne treatment, but a skilled dermatologist should be able to offer a range of acne remedies best suited to your skincare needs.

Listed below are a few acne treatment options:

• Mild acne responds to over-the-counter skin care products
• Prescription acne medications can help moderate to serious acne
• Oral contraceptives are helpful for some women
• Antibiotics often work for moderate to severe cases of acne

A dermatologist also might suggest light or laser therapy or microdermabrasion to help acne. In very severe cases of acne, the sufferer may be given a prescription for isotretinoin, a powerful acne-fighting drug.
