Botox for Excessive Sweating and Migraines (Part B)

Migraines are incredibly painful and can be very disabling for some sufferers. According to the New York Headache Center, more than 28 million Americans are affected by migraines of varying severity.

While some people are able to cope with their migraines using traditional therapies or prescription drugs, others find these methods unhelpful. Over the counter pills are often not strong enough to stop the pain. For some sufferers, Botox injections are a last resort.

Botox for Migraine

WomensHealth.gov describes migraine headaches as "an intense throbbing pain on one, or sometimes, both sides of the head." In addition to the throbbing pain, migraines can also cause nausea, sensitivity to light and vomiting. Researchers don't understand exactly why migraines occur, but they know they are most common in women.

Migraines are believed to be triggered by chemicals in the brain that trigger inflammation. Researchers aren't sure exactly how Botox injections interrupt that process, but many migraine sufferers have reported relief with Botox.

According to Migraines.org, one study conducted at the University of California, San Francisco showed that 75% of participants reported relief from migraine pain after receiving Botox injections in the face and head. In this study, participants received injections into the forehead, side and back of the head and brow; relief from migraines lasted about 6 months.

FDA Approval

Botox is not currently approved by the FDA for the treatment of migraines, but it may be in the future. Allergan, the manufacturer of Botox, is currently investigating Botox treatments for migraines in clinical studies. If the results are to their liking, they may submit an application to the FDA for approval.

Cost of Botox Treatment for Migraines

Botox injections are expensive and can prevent many migraine sufferers from pursuing treatment. Migraines.org estimates that botox treatment for migraine headaches costs roughly $350 for each injection area. That cost must be repeated every 4 to 6 months.

Unfortunately, most insurance companies do not cover Botox injections for migraines. The Seattle Times reported that Regence Blue Shield, a major health insurer in Washington, stopped paying for botox migraine treatments on October 1, 2008. They said there was little scientific evidence to support the use of Botox injections for migraine relief.
