Botox Risks and Complications (Part B)

With millions of Botox treatments performed each year, the manufacturer Allergan claims that Botox is safe for its intended cosmetic purpose. However, several patients allege that Botox injections caused permanent damage or health problems.

Botox Lawsuits

Most Botox treatments go as planned and cause few side effects. When Botox injections go wrong, however, they can cause lasting damage and even death.

That's what several family members alleged in 2008 when they filed suit against Botox-maker Allergan. The lawsuit was filed in California by the family members of three patients they say died after receiving Botox injections, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Two of the deaths were linked to non-cosmetic purposes, including Botox treatments for neck pain and cerebral palsy. Another death occurred after a woman received Botox injections for wrinkles. Other plaintiffs in the case allege that they have been permanently disabled by Botox treatments, which left them with muscle weakness, blurry vision or breathing trouble.

FDA Black Box Warning

It appears that many of these side effects and Botox lawsuits have attracted the attention of the Food & Drug Administration. In 2009, the FDA announced that Botox must carry a "black box warning," which cautions that Botox injections may lead to rare but life-threatening side effects, according to WebMD.com.

While all boxes of Botox must carry this warning, WebMD notes that most of the known deaths or health complications have occurred when Botox injections are used for non-cosmetic purposes to treat muscle pain, migraines or cerebral palsy. Cosmetic use of Botox appears to be safer, since lower doses are used in these treatments.

How to Prevent Botox Complications

Botox can be safe when used as directed, and there are several ways that you can help prevent Botox side effects or complications. The best way to prevent Botox side effects is to go to a doctor who specializes in cosmetic surgery and has lots of experience with Botox injections. Avoid getting Botox at a spa, mall center or Botox party, since the people administering the Botox injection are probably not licensed physicians.

Botox parties are popular because they can help you save money, but it's not worth the risk.

In addition, return to your doctor if you notice any health problems after a Botox injection, such as difficultly swallowing, trouble breathing or unusual swelling. These side effects could indicate that there is a problem with your injection.
