J.K. Rowling's educational history in Great Britain allowed her to both represent and embellish its institutions, resulting in her fictional Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. While young American readers may not recognize the soft parody of British boarding schools, they definitely associate with the setting. At Hogwarts, young sorcerers can learn and grow in an atmosphere of perpetual interest, if not death-defying excitement. This enthusiasm for learning is passed on by Harry out of necessity in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, in which the book's hero saves lives by teaching others the special survival skills that he has learned.

The Origins of Harry and Hogwarts

Harry Potter's crucial need to learn in order to help good sorcery triumph over dark magic shows Rowling's ethical underpinnings. Prior to becoming a teacher, Rowling worked for a time in London for the global civil rights group, Amnesty International. Her sharp awareness of racial divisions surface as the framework for Harry's wizarding world and beyond. Her perception may have blossomed while living in various countries in Europe as well as studying about African nations in college.

Rowling has also used the success of the Harry Potter books and movies to forward public tolerance and education. Once on welfare, Rowling now promotes organizations that directly help poor and uneducated people, such as Reading Is Fundamental. Her contract stipulations for the new Harry Potter movie and others include charitable donations from companies that benefit from product placement.

All of these life facts, disguised as fiction, are displayed in snippets throughout the Harry Potter series. The notion of people trying to find the best part of themselves in order to improve life for everyone surfaces again and again. That it may be driven by a personal vendetta, such as Harry's relationship with Lord Voldemort, does not matter. As Rowling shows, where the ideas come from do not matter, it is the end result that counts.
