Few people will argue that placing a focus on preventative health care is essential to helping people live longer lives while also reducing the nation's health care costs.

In fact, a poll that was recently conducted by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation found that an overwhelming percentage of Americans consider prevention to be a top priority of health care reform. Yet, despite having support from the American people, preventative actions still are not being taken as often as they should be.

Exploring the Reasons for Poor Preventative Care

Although most Americans agree that prevention is crucial, many are failing to take preventative care of their health. There are several reasons behind this lack of care.

Reasons for lack of preventative care:

• Lack of affordable health insurance makes it impossible for many Americans to obtain health insurance coverage
• Numerous health insurance policies do not provide coverage for preventative care
• Many Americans have not been properly educated regarding proper preventative care practices

Since the lack of preventative care in the United States is caused by a number of factors, many agree that a multi-faceted approach will be necessary in order to successfully reform health care.

Rather than simply making certain everyone has an affordable health care plan to fall back upon, efforts must also be made to educate the public about the benefits of preventative care and to encourage them to take advantage of preventative care as often as possible.

Obama's Health Care Plan Gains Support from the AMA

Although there are still many critics who are not pleased with the proposed Obama health plan, there are just as many who have shown their support for his plans to reform the US health care system.

In fact, the American Medical Association recently voiced its support for the plan, saying it offered legislation that "includes a broad range of provisions that are key to effective, comprehensive health system reform."

How these factors will ultimately pan out with the revamping of the U.S. health care system still remains to be seen. One certainty however, is that health care reform is going to happen and we will likely see far more effort being placed on prevention in the very near future.
