What is a Normal Bounce Rate?

When you are analyzing the overall effectiveness of your website, an important factor to consider is your bounce rate. This number refers to the people who visit your website, take a look at the page they land on, and then leave without clicking through to other pages.

Basically, they peek at your website and then "bounce" away, either back to their search results or the website that provided the link, or they just closed their Internet browser. It doesn't so much matter where they went to after quickly visiting your site, it only matters that they are gone.

When you are designing your website, your main goal is to keep visitors on your website as long as possible (hopefully long enough to make a sale). By understanding your bounce rate and making changes to your website based on those findings, you can help your visitors enjoy their experience and your website even more.

So what is a normal bounce rate?

There will be a few different definitions on what is considered "normal" for a bounce rate depending on the type of web page you are referring to. Blogs for example, will almost always have a much higher bounce rate than other types of web pages because people usually visit a blog to read about a very specific subject or article and once they have found that information, they leave.

A great bounce rate is considered anything under 20%. This means that only 20% of all the visitors that land on that specific page leave without visiting any other page on your website. This number is extremely difficult to achieve, but is a fantastic goal.

A good bounce rate is typically between 21-35%.

Anything above 36% is a signal that you should investigate why so many visitors are leaving your site and anything above 50% means you need to figure that out right away.

What are some factors that could lead to a high bounce rate?

When visitors are going to your website, they are expecting two things to happen:
  • They are presented with a website filled with fresh, original content that gives them the information they were searching for.
  • They are presented with a website that is easy to navigate and user friendly.

When you fail to deliver these two basic premises, users do not tend to stick around. Other factors that influence bounce rates include:
  • Slow loading pages, or pages that require plug-ins
  • Ads disguising themselves as content
  • Links that are sending visitors to your webpage for information that is not listed on that page (use Google Analytics to determine who is linking to what pages on your website)
