Sexual Addiction

Sexual addiction is a disorder in which a person is unable to control his or her sexual desires or impulses despite negative consequences. An addict may have compulsive sexual thoughts or participate in frequent sexual acts.

Illegal forms of sexual addiction may include exhibitionism, rape, and child molestation. However, legal forms of sex addiction may involve excessive masturbation, the use of pornography, or the use of phone sex lines. In both cases, after building up a tolerance, the sex addict may feel the need to intensify his or her behavior in order to achieve the desired results.

There are several programs throughout the country that treat sexual addiction. While substance abuse and gambling treatment focuses on abstaining from the drugs or behavior, sexual addiction treatment seeks to end compulsive sexual behavior. These programs often ask the addict to abstain from sex for a period of 60-90 days in order to understand the root cause of the sexual addiction.

Sexual addiction treatment also addresses the feelings of shame and guilt that accompany this addiction. An experienced counselor will work with the addict to get through these negative emotions so he or she can lead a satisfying and productive life.

Sex Addicts Anonymous is a 12-Step program that is designed to help those who are addicted to compulsive sexual thoughts and behaviors. This group is similar to support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous in that it uses a 12-Step model for recovery.
