Linkedin is a professional networking site that offers opportunities for business people to connect in a forum similar to the popular social networking sites MySpace and Facebook. Linkedin is based in California and has over 41 million members across the world. Every second, one new member joins LinkedIn and approximately 50% of all members are located outside the United States. Executives from all of the Fortune 500 companies are members of the website.

Linkedin was launched in May of 2003 by five founders. The company just celebrated their 6^th anniversary and has grown their staff to 350.

Linkedin is a free service, but there are advanced "business packages" ranging from $24.95 to $499.95 per month.

Linkedin is available in four languages - English, Spanish, French, and German.

In his "Fast Start Guide to LinkedIn Success," Randy Schrum advises readers that if done correctly, Linkedin "will pay amazing dividends" in your professional career.

To get the most out of your Linkedin account Schrum suggests the following tips for success:

• Treat your Linkedin profile as you would your resume. Include descriptive SEO keywords in your Headline section. Keep your reader interested in your Summary section by referencing general details about your life, relationships, profession, etc. Write 5-10 bullet points about your experience in the Specialties section. Write a short paragraph on your professional history for the Experience section.
• Join groups on LinkedIn to build your network. Create a group if one doesn't exist that should. Participate with meaningful content and use creative headlines to interact with others.
• Join OpenNetworker, a site that allows you to quickly build your professional network for a small monthly or annual fee.
