"True Blood" is set in the small fictional town of Bon Temps, Louisiana. The main character is Sookie Stackhouse, a telepathic waitress (played by Anna Paquin) who is attracted to vampire Bill Compton (played by Stephen Moyer) because she cannot hear his thoughts. He is a former Civil War solider-turned-vampire who has returned to town after 150 years.
Anna Paquin won the 2009 Golden Globe Award, Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Drama, for her part in "True Blood." Although viewership is lower than the regular network television hits, "True Blood" is considered a success with HBO.
"True Blood" viewership seems to be increasing as more viewers learn about the program. In fact the New York Times reports on July 12, 2009, "In the three episodes measured so far this, its second, season, ‘True Blood' has amassed viewer totals that any network, including broadcast networks, would be excited to own: 12.1 million, 10 million and 10.3 million. And HBO has attracted those viewers from an audience base about a third the size of fully distributed networks."
The vampire television genre captures our attention and need to explore the supernatural as well as the darker side of life.
Even advertisers are getting into the action. A Gillette billboard ties their razor promotional campaign into "True Blood," using a vampire hunk to caress his cleanly shaven face next to the phrase "Dead Sexy."
In an additional ad, one for Marc Ecko cologne, a male vampire nibbles at a naked woman's neck with the line "Attract a Human."
Vampire books, movies, television shows, and products are here and will last for at least a little while.
