80% of Twitter Traffic Doesn’t Come from Twitter (and Other Twitter Facts)

June 30, 2009 – New research just came out from Evan Weaver, Twitter’s lead engineer, about some recent stats concerning Twitter’s performance and the results are pretty amazing (via Mediapost).

According to Weaver:

  • The average Twitter user has 126 followers
  • 80% of Twitter’s traffic arrives through third-party programs, only 20% originates through Twitter’s website. If you are a marketer using Twitter for your company, these stats mean that you may be underestimating your Twitter generated traffic “by a factor of 5.”
  • Over 300 tweets per second were being added to Twitter’s message queue during President Obama’s January inauguration

These provocative stats were released during a talk Weaver gave at the QCon 2009 where the Tech lead discussed the architecture of Twitter from an optimization and scalability perspective. You can actually see Weaver’s entire slide show from QCon by visiting his blog.
