October 26, 2011 – Anyone who has been to an independent bakery or watched TV shows like Ace of Cakes knows that running your own pastry palace is time-consuming but worth the effort. The same can be said for creating and marketing content on the Internet to promote your business.
As with any bakery, you need to have a menu of great recipes. Through trial and error, you can learn what sells and what goes stale at the end of the day. Your content is just like that – you need to decide if your clients are more interested in long, informative articles or if they’d rather read (and share) a short, quirky blog post. Watch and see what gets more comments/shares/likes on your website and social media to figure out your best “menu” offerings.
Once you’re up and running with some sweet and savory selections, it’s time to draw in clients. Bakeries have the luxury of sight and smell to entice passers by. On the Internet, you need tofocus on your meta descriptions and social media posts to attract clients to your content.
Many bakeries give away free samples on the counter to test a new recipe, promote a slow seller, or showcase a specialty. You can do this with your content as well! At We Do Web Content we use a concept called “spotlight blogging” where we use short blogs to lead readers into a longer, more informative article. The blogs are often condensed versions or the article to “whet their appetite” or information that was important to the topic but just didn’t make it into the actual article. This gives them a taste of what your main content menu has to offer!
Finally, any small business is going to have trouble getting clients if they can’t be found. A brick and mortar bakery can use flashy signs and building décor to show off their location, and if they’re smart, they’ll create local business listings on search sites like Yelp, MerchantCircle, YellowPages, and Google Places. If your business has an office, you can use these to your advantage, too.
As for getting your actual content found, that’s where you need to get social! Link sharing is super important to reaching out to clients and being seen. Use your own social media profiles to spread your latest content offering, but also make sure you’re sharing any great finds written by others – hopefully they’ll reciprocate!
We’ll end this blog with a delicious fall recipe just in time for your Halloween party! Because what’s an article about bakeries without a cookie at the end?
White Chocolate Pumpkin Spice Cookies (the same ones Browser was eating the other day!)
This recipe comes to you from the Tasty Kitchen blog, one of my favorite places for new recipes. I made these for the office and they got rave reviews. Nice and moist, spicy and sweet – perfect blend of fall flavors.
